Murrayshire
I'll give you an overview of my oldest dd's education so far....She has been in PS from K-5th....I pulled her out to start middle and high since those schools are not the greatest in our area. So she hasn't had much history, in depth, and what she has had is about our state, communities, and some american..... This year for 6th grade we are using Sonlight Core F(5)....she loves it and loves all the cultural activities..... So for 7th I was planning on using SL Core G(6) ancients and middle ages....then for 8th use SL Core H(7) but I would like to throw in American History with core H. Has anyone used the All American History Volumes with World History?? I need a little direction in combining SL H with an American History study.... I don't want to spend a fortune but I want these subjects at least touched on and understood before reaching High School....I was planning on using SL 100 for 9th grade since my friend has the whole core and willing to sell for a bargain. My youngest dd will be using SL core D(3) for her fourth grade year in late summer.....so I know my oldest dd will be listening in on her books as well. Any suggestions would be soooo helpful! Thank you so very much!!
texasmel
SL 7 and Core 100 really overlap one another. On the Sonlight forums, there are threads & schedules on how to combine these two. It's really a nice fit and allows you to stretch out those two cores and dig deeper rather than repeating. That was my plan (I was using Mystery of History as my spine for cores 6 & 7) but when volume 4 wasn't ready in time, we started Core 100 from the beginning. Sooo, I don't have actual experience combining, but I like the idea!
Murrayshire
Thank you....I'll flip over to the SL forums and see what they say? Has anyone used the All American History books?? Would love to know what you guys think!!
Murrayshire
Still wondering about those All American History volumes? Haven't heard through SL yet about combining World and American!? Anyone have their take on this?
PeterPan
The Bright Ideas Press has large samples, so you can get a feel for AAH. It's pretty dry, basic writing. You might be happier adding in say the BJU 8 text. Or do like the other poster said and blend 100 and 7. Or combine 6 and 7 into one year and do 100 the next year. Mom22ns
If you are going to do Core 100, I wouldn't combine. Core 6 and 7 will be perfect level for her for 7th-8th grade. Enjoy them, then do American history when you are done. If you still like SL, go with Core 100. If not there are other good options for American in high school. Could you pass some of those good options for American in High School my way....? Now, I may be leaning toward American for 7th and 8th ( to go along with my youngers American study) and then do World History for 9th grade....Any really great World History book ideas for High School as well? Thank you!

Thank you! If your youngers are going to do American first, I'd just put your 7th or 8th grader doing Core 100. It works great in Jr High. For high school, I shouldn't say there are great programs, more like there are great resources. There is MFW American which is two years and includes government. I am planning to use a WTM approach. If you look at Hippocampus or some of the opensource college courses you can find lectures to accompany most of the popular AP level text books. This is one example. Or there is this syllabus. Or this from Pearson. I believe this is the same as hippocampus. There is always The Teaching Company videos too. We'll be using the Hippocampus lectures along with America: A Narrative History and then adding in some appropriate historical fiction. We'll also do American Lit at the same time. These are awesome websites! Thank you! Here's a silly question for you.....Is there a prerequisite for taking an AP class? Does this make sense? Trish
Thank you....I'll flip over to the SL forums and see what they say? Has anyone used the All American History books?? Would love to know what you guys think!! We used AAH last year, in the first quarter. It is dry. It is also a little disjointed, in that it will start with one explorer and there will be certain types of info on his background and leading up to his voyages, then they switch to another one, same thing; only to come back to the first guy with later information. There didn't seem to be any reason for the discontinuity, and I just didn't care for it. Also it seemed we spent FOREVER on explorers. yes I know they're important, but SHEESH. One nice thing we used was the Time Travelers Series on American History. Home School in the Woods Time Travelers Series

Mom22ns
In history classes there are no prerequisites for AP. An AP class should be college level. That should mean they already have some knowledge about what happened. The focus becomes stronger on why it happened. There is a lot covered so already having some general subject knowledge really helps.
