Book recommendations for skeptics or agnostics?

Recommended Posts

I am looking for book recommendations for a good friend who is a "spiritual seeker", someone who has gone from a vaguely Christian upbringing (occasional church, no talking about God) to dabbling in Sufism and Buddhism to converting to Episcopalianism...and Christopher Hitchens-esque atheism and still doesn't know what she believes. She would like something that presents "a counterargument" to atheism.

One of her favorite Christian books is Oswald Chamber's My Utmost for His Highest. She has also enjoyed Kierkegaard's Provocations, Dietrich Bonhoeffer and CS Lewis' Mere Christianity.

Any other suggestions?

Simply Christian, by N.T. Wright or maybe The Reason for God: Belief in an Age of Skepticism, by Timothy Keller.

And if she is interested in the science/faith issue, perhaps God and Stephen Hawking: Whose Design is It Anyway, by John Lennox or The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief, by Francis Collins.

Thank you. These last two look interesting.

.and Christopher Hitchens-esque atheism

Christopher Hitchens' brother, Peter Hitchens, wrote the excellent Rage Against God about his conversion from atheism to Christianity. It has a scholarly tone that she may find appealing, and Peter Hitchens is one of the least judgmental Christian authors I have read. You would have to try very, very hard to be offended by him.

Also, if she is interested in a more methodical study, William L. Craig, a prominent apologist who has debated a number of atheists, including Christopher Hitchens, has a number of books, one of the most accessible of which is On Guard. You can find more about his books and debates (I have the Craig v. Hitchens debate on DVD--it's fabulous) on his website, www.reasonablefaith.org.

Evidence that Demands a Verdict is also good.

Eta: someone else mentioned debates & I think someone posted in the hitches thread a whie back links top a blog post by Douglas Wilson (the classical homeschool guy...not the vision forum guy) where he referred to debates he had with Hitchens. I've never watched them but I imagine they would be fascinating.

Not a book, a lecture. And not Christian, but if she has dabbled in Sufism she might be interested?? It's excellent.

In fact, they are the same Douglas Wilson. The video from those debates is called Collision, I think.
