bnrmom
We have an ipad and an iphone, but not a mac computer. I really want to update my iphone and ipad with the newest operating system so we have icloud, but when I plug in my iphone to update, I get a message that says something like "You have items on your phone that are not on your desktop. You should copy these before updating." Uh, how do I do this? How do I know which items? Does this mean they are going to be deleted if I update? I assume the message is referring to apps that I have downloaded directly to my phone? Or do they mean contacts that I entered directly to my phone? If anyone could help me with this I would be very grateful!
Guest ErinG
Did you sync it before trying to install the update?
bnrmom
I didn't sync because last time it deleted all the contacts I entered directly into my phone. We are having a lot of sync issues and I end up just not using it.
parias1126
You need to backup and sync first. Make sure you check all the iTunes tabs so that you know what is being synced back and forth. After you sync it, them update it.
JumpedIntoTheDeepEndFirst
I'm going to presume that you are using iTunes on your PC for syncing with your iDevices. When you have iTunes open and your iDevice plugged in you will see it on the list on the left hand side where it lists your library items (ie. Music, Movies, etc.), iTunes store, playlists, etc. If memory serves you then right click on the name of your device and choose "backup". This should put all the info from your iDevice onto the computer. Then you should stop getting this message. Also, if you don't backup you could find the info on your computer replaces what is on your iDevice and you might loose apps, info etc. You can also download apps purchased on your iDevice to iTunes from within iTunes as well as update them. Not that this replaces backing up but it can help. At least this is the process as I understand it-hope it helps.
