FairyMom
I need a gift for a distant relative for this weekend who is coming to visit. I don't know him very well, although he's a thinker not a jock. Any ideas? Not too obscure; I need something from a store. Thanks!! :D
IlluminatedAttic
Itunes gift certificate. It's my go to gift for teens and always seems to be appreciated.
Pippen
I bought these Magnet Balls for my teens based on a recommendation here. Everyone is really liking them. I was able to find a different brand-Buckeyballs-locally in a mall kiosk. http://www.amazon.com/Magnet-Balls-Original-Magnetic-Collectors/dp/B003D7CFTQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325134121&sr=8-
Nakia
For that age, I'd say gift cards are the way to go, especially since you don't know him well. iTunes, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc would work well, I think. Or maybe a popular restaurant?
Miselainia
I've found $3-5 chess sets are good for those thinker types. :)
venusmom
Gift cards to movies are usually nice. Or give a gift card to a movie retailer and pop in a bag or two of microwave popcorn, movie size box of candy and a can or two of soda or bottle of water for a fun gift basket / box. AHASRADA
Gift cards or cash, definitely. My ds asked for cash for his 15th birthday, and was thrilled that most everyone respected that. He was able to pool his bday $$ to buy something he really wanted, rather than receiving several little $20 gifts. If you don't like cash, a gift card to Amazon, B&N or itunes would be great (just make sure he uses itunes before choosing that one). Kebo
Pocket knife cool watch (doesn't have to be expensive) magazine subscription, if he has hobbies or interests (my 14yo likes Nat Geo)
KRG
My son is 14 and one of his Christmas gifts was an electronic dart board. He loves it! I bought it for $15 at walmart.
Farmgirl70
I second BuckyBalls or National Geographic. I have a 16 yo thinker here and those were definite winners!

FairyMom
I don't mind gift cards, but I wanted something tangible also. Nat Geo!!! Awesome!! Thanks. If I can find the BuckyBalls local that would be great. :)

He's not a real musical type. Great ideas, though.
lisabees
Maybe some of my kids' gifts will give you an idea... Ds18 asked for Smithsonian and already gets BBC's Knowledge. He also got loose tea and accessories, a cool scarf, The Talent Code book, notepads, notebook and pens for all of his ideas (Barnes and Nobles has nice moleskine notebooks), a Dr Who Sonic screwdriver and mocs. He got buckeyballs last year. ;) DS12 got Dr Who and Rubik's Cube mugs with hot chocolate, bulk size Japanese snacks and gift card to Asian Market, Terry Pratchett And Garth Nix books (Abhorsen trilogy), video editing software and mocs. In-laws got him those metal links you try to take apart and a Sudoku board game. He loves Rubik's cubes of all kinds. He did get Scrabble (and Yahtzee Flash). Addicting, but absolutely frustrating for me, because I sometimes miss 15 words!! Food themes are always fun! A good game is a great idea, too. Especially one-person logic games. I have to add that my kids also asked for cash. No one obliged. They would have loved it, if they had.
