Aromatherapy - Never tried this, have you?

Recommended Posts

If you use good quality oils it does work. But just like with any medicine, it isn't a one size fits all remedy.

:iagree:

For example, lavender oil is meant to help with insomnia, but it doesn't work for anyone in my family. Even though we like the scent and may use it during the day just because it smells nice, it irritates us at some level, so it won't relax us at night. Majorum works on us for that purpose, though :)

It's much better to buy from a shop than order online if you're buying something new so you can have a sniff :)

Okay I'm going to show my ignorance on this topic.... What do you do with the oils. Are they just somehow freshening the air in your home or do you dab some on your skin? I'd love to hear what people use and how they think it works. Clearly I am need of an aromatherapy education!

A lot of my doula clients use it during labor, so I think it works well! One client used lavender oil all over her skin during transition and I swear it relaxed her almost TOO much.

I'm currently using peppermint oil to help with my nausea. Peppermint can also cause uterine contractions, so I have to take a few precautions.

There are different schools of thought which can vary widely on what are acceptable uses.

We diffuse into the air which, at least with the cool air diffusers, can help filter the junk in the air. I've never used a heat diffuser so don't know on that. We use essential oils usually with a carrier oil (olive, coconut, almond, etc.) on the bottom of the feet a lot as there is less chance of skin reaction but still gets into the cells.
