dirty ethel rackham
Thanks for the PSA announcements about Christmas and dogs - especially the one about glass ornaments. So, as we were decorating our tree, we put away all the glass ball ornaments. We started to put up the cinnamon applesauce ones, until the dog started to sniff them and tried to eat them. Strike that. Then, we had to nix the candy canes. The only ornaments left are the ones that the kids have made, ones from our family vacations, and a few that my mom made years ago. The tree is looking a little bare this year. Then I discovered that we can't use our traditional tree skirt because it closely resembles a stuffed toy (or at least Bear thinks so.) Do I have time to sew a tree skirt? All the craft shows are over so I can't find a nicely handcrafted on. So, the lesson here is no glass, no fleece, no smelly stuff. Bummer, man! Our puppy has completely ignored the tree so far, but has tried (repeatedly) to eat the one and only wrapped gift under the tree. He has a thing for paper. I thought for sure he'd go after candy canes, but they have not attracted his attention at all.
JudoMom
Why no glass? I've been lucky--Jed (the 5.5 month old hyper goat dog) hasn't touched the tree.
MamaT
Our English Lab is not interested in the tree. Our kitties, however, have made a mess of it. It looked so pretty when we first decorated, but I have to "redecorate" every morning. They wait until we go to sleep.
AK_Mom4
We have successfully trained the giant monster puppy twins to stay away from the tree. However, the cat does not follow the same rules. He likes to climb the tree and knock the ornaments down for the monster pups to eat. All the gifts are currently stashed on top of the piano. DH rescued some more ornaments this morning from the wonder pups. Sigh.
Remudamom
My dog ate all the gingerbread cookies she could reach.
ktgrok
Also, no tinsel. Very dangerous if they eat it. I haven't had tinsel in 20 years. This year I discoverd a safer version from Vermont Country Store, that is a non disposable, metal version that hangs. I'm estatic to have tinsel! rwjx2khsmj
Our tree is only decorated on the top half and the tree skirt has been packed away. The puppies are now only nibbling at it every once in awhile. I didn't even go to this extreme when there was a toddler in the house. Lovin Learnin
My puppy is not interested in the packages, for which I am most grateful. But he LOVES the ornaments, especially the ones that resemble stuffed toys. This dog has a passion for stuffed animals, so much so that he sneaks them from dd's room just to love on them. I'm considering getting him one for xmas but my last dog ate a stuffed animal and needed emergency surgery, poor thing.
TravelingChris
We do glass ornaments, just not on the lower branches. We never have tinsel because of cats. In fact, that is why I don't have glass ornaments close to the bottom- because of our cat-not our dog. Our dog is a miniature poodle and very well behaved, usually. He just likes trash, occasionally, if left out. I don't do that and the one girl who did that is normally at college so no more problems at all. Lara in Colo
The first year DH and I were married (no children yet) I decided to decorate with popcorn. I painstakingly strung popcorn on thread and made a very long strand of popcorn. The next day I found my chow eating the popcorn. She had string hanging out of her mouth, I pullled. And pulled. And pulled. Out came a three foot long strand of popcorn (still on the thread). I will never forget the view of her open mouth and me pulling soggy wet popcorn from her mouth (sort of the opposite of a momma bird). Needless to say, I do not have popcorn on the tree anymore. Our dogs don't care about the tree at all (although my big black lab tried to get at the one present the kids tried to put under the tree - to be fair, the kids drove him to it!) but the kitty is a MONSTER!!! This is his first Christmas - and he is VERY thankful that we went out of our way to put a giant climbing post in the living room.... :tongue_smilie: No glass ornaments, and I redecorate each day!
