Knitting question, help please!

Recommended Posts

I am making a scarf that was posted in a previous link.

I am having difficulty with reducing and keeping the correct amount of stitches on the needle.

When you reduce 3 stitches, my method is to knit the first two, pull the first stitch over the 2nd and then do this 2 more times. So then I have the 4th stitch moved over to the 2nd needle. Is that considered the first knit then? Or do I move it back and work it again.

Thanks.

I don't know the pattern, but if I were knitting it I would cast off three, and then leaving the last stitch on the right hand needle, knit the next two, ending with three on the right needle. My reasoning is this--the final stitch of your cast off has already been worked-you knitted it onto the right needle and then slipped a stitch over it, but it has already been knitted. Sound right?

Well, that is what I thought too. Somehow it's not working right.

SOmeone else suggested I post on Ravelry, hoping someone knows the pattern over there. The person who posted about it here, doesn't post often, so I may not get her answer.

Thanks for your help.

Can you link to the pattern?

If I read the pattern, I may be able to work it out.

It's a copywrited pattern, so I just included part of it.

Cast on 31 stitches, Knit across all stitches at once.

Row 1 Slip 1, k2, yo, k27, p1

Row 2 Slip 1, k2, yo, k28, p1

Row 3 Slip 1, k2, yo, k29, p1

Row 4 Slip 1, k2, yo, k30, p1

Row 5 Cast-off 3, k2, yo, k28, p1

Row 6 Cast-off 3, k2, yo, k11 ( this leaves 16 stitches on the needle)

Row 7 K 14, p1

Row 8 slip 1, k2, yo, k11, Turn ( leave 17)

Row 9 K14, p1

Thank you.

I just knit this, and the numbers are correct, but it is not written well.

When you have cast off the 3 stitches in row 6 then K2, yo, K11, you need to turn the work, ignore the stitches in the rest of the row and knit 14, p 1, back to the beginning of the row. This is called short rows. With out seeing the pattern, it is hard to tell what you are making.

Does this make sense?

I am making this scarf

http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/libr...-flounce-scarf

When I get to Row 6 I don't have enough stitches, so I am doing something. I slip one to the other needle, knit the next and then pull the first stitch thru. I have to do that 3 times. At that point I have a stitch on my right needle. Is that my first knit stitch then? I don't know what I am missing..this seems so easy. I believe I figured out the short rows, that's fine.

OK, row 6.

You knit 2. These are now on the right needle. Pass the first stitch over the second one.

Knit another stitch. Again you have two stitches on the right needle. Pass the first stitch over the second stitch.

Knit another stitch. Pass first stitch over second.

You should now have one stitch on the right needle.

You then knit 2 off of the left needle, yo, then knit 11, then turn and work row 7.

Does that help?

ETA: The link does not work.
