I hate the holidays. There I said it. I am really trying to be of good cheer....really.

Cut out all the stuff you don't like about the holiday, and add in things that you and your family consider fun.

Honestly our Christmas eve around here is opening a new family video game and playing it in the afternoon. In the evening we open a new dvd and the new pjs, cuddle on the couch and watch it. We get take out Chinese, and decorate some cookies. Easy, peasy, and we all love it.

Let's go to a deserted island until Jan 1st! I hate the holidays, too. I hate the commercialism, the "I didn't get what I wanted" attitude and the stress of trying to add presents into an already tight budget. I did the something you want, need, wear, read this year for my kids to try to cut out the commercialism and I have discussed this with DD-8 to really think about what she puts on her list. When she first made her list she had 1. doll house (already has a doll house but wants a different one). 2. a baby doll and all of the accessories (again, has dolls, accessories and doesn't play with them...EVER and 3. a play kitchen. (Yep, already has one but wanted a different one than the one she has. This is exactly why we changed the way we are doing it.

Our Christmas eve is a picnic or pizza and a bottle of red wine while watching the 24 hours of A Christmas Story on tv in the hotel at a ski resort (or at home) waiting for the kids to fall asleep then hubby and I finish the bottle of wine and wrap the rest of the presents. About fifteen years ago, we boiled Christmas down to the almost nothing then started adding in the parts we liked. Over the years, other family members asked if they they could join us - they liked what we were making. We dumped the decorations and expensive presents. We added in being together and ENJOYING each other. We made all new traditions that we love and cherish.

Ba HUMBUG for now, but make it better, and Merry Christmas.

We don't hate the holidays here, but there was a time.......

I grew up with a mom who expected the PERFECT Rockwell Christmas every year. Perfect mistletoe. Perfect tree. Perfectly balanced ornaments (and no junky ones please!!!) Perfect Christmas Eve caroling party, complete with perfect selection of perfect Christmas cookies of at least 15 kinds (home-made, of course). Christmas morning was perfectly matched pajamas, no throwing the wrapping paper around.....one gift and then perfect breakfast, and then perfectly coordinated unwrapping of gifts (watch one person open, then the next...and so on).

Exhausting.

I gave up on the perfect Christmas a while ago :) We have a lopsided tree, with lopsided ornaments, half of which are crappy dollar store ornaments, a few are kid made, and a few special ones. We have cheesy decorations (very minimal!) and play lots of Christmas songs. We bake imperfect, partially burned cookies with overly sugary frosting in odd colors like brown and grey  We watch Miracle on 34th Street (why? because it's on Netflix Streaming and it's easyyyy.......:001_smile:)

DH and the kids spent the evening literally throwing lights on the bushes outside our front door. Not ARRANGING them...throwing them. :tongue_smilie: They had a blast.

Oh, I wanted to add that we still have Christmas morning with early rising, filled stockings, and presents. We do take turns opening presents - for us/me it helps with the feeling of appreciation, plus my kids are only getting 4 things this Christmas, one big ticket item, a book, cute outfit, and then something small they wanted. Then later in the morning we trek to the in laws.

ETA: The only thing I changed this year that I was dreading was the wrapping paper issue. We made fabric bags. For me I can now be even more relaxed knowing I don't have to do battle with wrapping paper. Yeah, it's a personal issue. LOL
