Guided meditation/relaxation for children?

Recommended Posts

Basic relaxation/medication you can learn/lead. If you have/find a yoga video, they usually end with a relaxation/meditation section. ;)

A really simple, fast tool is "ki breathing" (used in different forms in yoga and martial arts): all you do is teach them to take a slow, deep breath in thru their nose and then slowly breathe out their mouth. Repeat for a total of maybe 3 times, the last time try to exhale ALL the air in your body. Whenever they are feeling agitated or squirrelly, I ask them to do their ki breathing and it works wonders. :D Try it -- I dare you not to feel more relaxed!

We've started using "Bedtime Stories" by Clarissa Pinkola Estes. I found it on iTunes when I was desperate one night. I skip the first track, because it's a short meditation for adults. But the rest is good; my daughters are enjoying it immensely.

In case it's helpful, Ms. Estes is a Jungian psychologist who has spent a lot of time working to develop strong, positive feminine imagery. We love it. But I know that some families here are not "into" that sort of thing.

But, for example, I am very happy that her version of Sleeping Beauty will be ingrained in my daughter's heads... every night they fall asleep to "There is nothing more magical than an old woman, beyond her childbearing years" who longs for a child, and then becomes pregnant. It's not a whitewashed version; there is a bad fairy, but even my younger daughter (who has become nervous about scary things) can handle the tension and it doesn't keep her awake.

And my younger daughter's very favorite story is the short retelling of the Pensive children pushing their way through the coats in the Wardrobe until they enter Narnia. She has begun asking for it every night. Yay!

:) Have fun!

Love Jim Weiss here, too. And - another huge fan of Clarissa Pinkola Estes!

It's odd to see this post today, I was just wondering something similar. My mother gave DS a guided meditation CD for kids last summer, and DS requested it today. I would love to find more.

The one we have is "Guided Fairy Meditations for Children" (I think)... It *is* about fairies, so be warned. It's about using one's imagination and going through a little door in a garden to a fairy world. It's sweet, but if for some reason you are not a fairy type person - it might not be your thing. :)

DS has learned some deep breathing and relaxation techniques that have spilled over into other parts of his life - one major advantage!

Ooh, my fairy-loving girls would go gaga. I'm looking into this one too. Thanks!
