ekfk
My daughter is a first grader but is doing 2nd grade LA. I got Spell and Write for grammar but it seems really basic. She also does Daily Language Review, which is starting to cover things Spell and Write doesn't even address. I homeschool through a charter school and they would like to cover certain concepts that aren't covered in Spell and Write either. I want to get her a good grammar workbook very soon. Can anyone recommend a good in-depth 2nd grade grammar workbook. Her school offers "First Language Lessons for the Well-Trained Mind" as an option. Have you used it? Do you like it? Guest
FLL is great for the age but Mom intense. If you want a workbook approach look at Growing with Grammar. http://www.growingwithgrammar.com For me, a Mom intense approach for grammar this young is better. Your choice depends on you. ErinE
I've used FLL with my oldest. I like the fact it encourages memorization of grammar terms and most of the grammar work is done quickly. I skip the poetry and narration exercises as ds gets does this in another program. We do grammar everyday because I like the daily reinforcement. Since we're nearing the end of FLL, he's going to use growing with grammar for the remainder of the year. Since your dd is younger, you could do the oral exercises in FLL and supplement with GWG. Critterfixer
Take a look at KISS grammar which is free online. My second grade boys like it. It is a workbook approach, but there may be more writing than a young child is comfortable with. I typically will split a lesson with a lot of writing over two days. But the majority of the workbooks focus on sentence structure and how the words relate to each other. We are also reading through Grammarland by Nesbit which has become their favorite read aloud this past month. (Also free.)
ekfk
Thanks for the suggestions. My concern with FLL when I looked into it was that it may be more than I thought we needed. But considering that other options seem so basic, I regret that we didn't use it. I'll look at the other suggestions and then maybe go with FLL for next year, if necessary. ChrissySC
As far as the depth, I not exactly sure how this would cover the core concepts for LA based on your Charter, but look at Learning Language Arts Through Literature. LLATL covers reading, spelling, writing, grammar, etc. in one text with additional reading, student activity book, charts, and so forth. You may feel that you will need to supplement writing at some point. This is easy enough with Writing Strands or WWW.
Bloggermom
I would go with CLE Language Arts. My kids love it and from 2nd grade on up it can be done independently. :)
Aurelia
For a workbook, you can try Growing with Grammar. Also the Winning with Writing program focuses more on writing but also covers basic grammar. I believe the version of Primary Language Lessons offered through Living Books Curriculum covers grammar well, but it might be advanced for your daughter since it's meant for the 2nd half of 2nd grade.
