worth complaining about? (duggar related)

Recommended Posts

Two nights ago my 12 y.o. daughter and I were watching "Mystery Diagnosis" in the 10pm slot on Discover Health. To my shock a vibrator commercial comes on (the "trojan vibrations" one). I muted it, DD was clueless. I figure, ok, it's the 10pm slot, maybe they aren't worried about being family friendly.

Last night we watch the Duggars (19 Kids and Counting) on the same station, 9pm slot. I think NO WAY will they show the vibrator ad during the Duggars.

It aired not once but twice during one Duggar episode!

Do the Duggars know they're being subsidized by **x toys? It's just so weird!

I promise I'm not a prude but it just seemed incredibly inappropriate to air these ads during family programming.

This is the ad in question:

I'm considering writing a complaint email to discover health or to the duggars (I assume they have contact info somewhere)-- am I overreacting?

If in a prime time slot, I would without a doubt email.

In this situation, being later, well, I think I would still email. Noting that, yes, it was a later time slot and you understand, but still, this is a family program.

I hate trashy commercials during family shows. Period.

We had the same type of problem with HUB. DD likes to watch My Little Pony, but one day, in each commercial break there were at least two ads for a Goosebumps type show. Scary atmosphere, guys in plastic masks, things jumping out. DD isn't sensitive, she watches Star Trek almost every day with Dh, plenty of masks there. But it bothered her a lot. I just didn't think I'd have to worry about Halloween type scary commercials two weeks before Christmas.

You'd think marketers would think a bit more about the audience of the show. Little girls do not equal scare tactic show. Duggar viewers don't equal sex toys.

I have never seen this ad. What part of the country do you live in like which time zone? The reason I am asking this is because a lot of channels don't change the time that shows are seen in different areas so in Midwest, we are seeing late night shows at 10:30. However if a certain channel only broadcast once then a show seen at midnight in the East COast would be seen at 9 pm on the West Coast. Many of the commercials are national. That doesn't mean I wouldn't be upset. But this kind of thing is one reason the two tvs we have in the general viewing area have DVRs so we can bypass all commercials.

According to my college-aged son, My Little Pony is (oddly enough) wildly popular with young men in their late teens and twenties. Apparently it has good plot lines.

That was my first thought as well. Back when we had cable, I got so annoyed when networks ran racy ads at 8 P.M. Pacific because they're thinking it's 11 P.M. Eastern and well past kids' bed times.

My teen boys have told me the same of a couple of their friends, and I'm so glad to hear it is not just them. Apparently the writers/producers are the same as from some other series they enjoyed.

I don't believe the time slot should dictate the advertising; programming content should. We regularly tape (DVR) shows of interest to us and our dc. The timer is set up to tape an episode of our favorite shows every time they air. Just because 19 Kids and Counting (for example) happens to air at 6, 8 and 10pm, I don't want my kids seeing inappropriate ads when they watch the episode the following AM.

Choosing appropriate programming content should equal appropriate advertising content. Period.

Is that something they said in a book?

Uh, well %$#!%# would have to first be proven to me that it exists and then it would have to freeze over entirely before I'd ever read a book about the Duggars so I wouldn't know.:lol::lol:

But if my LIFE was being show on TV, you can bet either myself, my friends, or my family would mention it if a vibrator was being marketed during the commercials. How could they not know??? :glare:

I'm taking a guess, after watching the commercial, that it could be shown in any time slot.:glare:

It looks like it was written to purposefully be used in time slots before 10pm. All the actors are clothed in regular day wear, the scenes are shot outside and not in a bedroom. Nothing tEa related is mentioned. No picture of the product is shown and it is verbally called a 'personal massager'.

The commercial writers probably followed strict guidelines to quallify the commercial for any time slot with the intent of advertising to moms who are watching shows with their families.

I know this isn't the same as what the op is talking about....but it reminded me of it. Why, during prime time....7:00ish...do they have to show movie trailers that are disgusting?? The other night...one came on for some demonic movie that's coming out. I had to tell both my kids (8 years old, and yes even the 16 year old) to turn away (our mute doesn't work and I couldn't get there quick enough to turn it). It was gross I tell ya....some person demonized with their leg twisting all the way around or something...even I turned away. Why do they think that is appropriate to air at a time when kids are watching tv? We only get 3 channels...it was either abc, nbc, or cbs.

The Duggars have no control over advertisements shown on Discovery.

You should write to the Discovery Channel and complain.

We haven't had Dish since March. We have a computer dedicated to our big-screen TV, and we only watch what we can stream on Netflix or other sources, and DVDs. We don't miss the commercials at.all.

Because who decides what's scary, inappropriate, or "demonic?" There are millions of people with 16 year olds who would be enterained by that movie; and movies are for profit business.

9 pm, Duggars show- yep, that one would bother me! I'd probably write and say something! The 10 PM one which I wouldn't really consider family programming not so much.

:iagree:

One does have to wonder. A couple of years ago we started watching the Macy's Christmas Parade. Family, right? Prime Time. Christmas AM. The first commercial was for an R-rated movie, with lots of fire, flames and explosions etc. That was the end of the parade. I know DD is more sensitive to some things, but I did think that was a bit over the top. How about TOY commercials for kids shows? Or cereal commercials?

I would let it go, and that is coming from someone who stopped watching television for about ten years because commericals in general were bothersome.

Presumably the Duggars are quite fond of sex given their rampant procreation, so I do not find it surprising that a sex toy ad would run on 10 p.m. time slot.

Although I do watch tv again now, I mute the commercials. Are the Duggar shows available on Netflix where they would be commercial free?

At very least, someone needs to point out to them the irony of running that particular ad during that particular show.

My 16yo son and his friends watch My Little Pony religiously.

They call themselves "Bronies." I first heard about them on NPR. The clip is hilarious.

So, I just watched the commercial. Aside from being porn-like in terms of the facial expressions and exaggeration, it was covert.

You'd have to know what it IS in order to understand the commercial, and if you know what it is, the commercial is not "inappropriate."

I think the commercial is tacky, and stupid, but it wouldn't bother me from the standpoint of what product it sells.

On the other hand, I HATE commercials targeted to children.

But then, we actually rarely end up watching commercials. We DVR almost everything we watch and zap commercials as we go. Even if we want to watch something when it's being broadcast, we wait 10 or 15 minutes past the regular start time and then watch from the recording specifically so that we can skip the commercials.

Honestly, I watched the vibrator commercial, and I didn't find it especially objectionable. As someone else said, all of the actors are fully clothed. No one does anything more extreme than hold hands. Sure, we all know what's implied, and I guess it could be uncomfortable for parents to answer a direct question from a child about what the product does, but I'm much less troubled by this one than I am by other commercials I've seen.

:iagree: Some of the advertisements are that of the Discovery channel. Others are placed by your cable company. The Duggars have no control of these ads. Even if made aware, they have little say - since some are inserted by the many cable companies across the nation.

Products used in the Duggar home for the sake of advertisement (various cleaning products shown and displayed) are under their control. If they didn't want to use them I am sure they would say so.

The earlier time slot is inappropriate. The later one doesn't surprise me.

I was TRYING to practice 'Think it don't say it' but you just had to post this.

With this show, it's not the commercials that will force you into having The Talk. :D
