Annabel Lee
For 2nd semester, possibly running into the summer, dd (15, sophomore) will need a high school chemistry course we can do at home. Can you recommend something based on our following criteria? 1. A course from an accredited source is a huge plus as that would avoid some hassles with our district (she attends ps for the bulk of her classes). 2. Dd wants a course that's easy to get through & get done in a hurry, an easy "A". 3. I want decent quality though, it doesn't have to be *THE* best, but I want it to be worth her time. 4. It has to come with a teacher - DVD or online, or be set up with extremely clear step-by-step instructions with contact info. because I am currently a chemistry dunce; I'll be learning right alongside her. 5. Either secular or Christian is OK. Off the top of my head, for these criteria, I only know of SOS, BJU, and maybe Apologia and K12. How well do Apologia & K12 fit my criteria? I haven't checked to see if Veritas offers HS science. What are some others I should check out? Thanks!
Lizzie in Ma
I ended up choosing Spectrum chemistry with Khan Academy videos. Not accredited but a good solid choice.
Teachin'Mine
Apologia Chemistry is a very good course, but by no means easy. I don't know if there are classes which use the text and are accredited, but obviously using the text on your own, or with DVDs, won't be accredited. Whatever you use, make sure her math skills are good with regard to measurement conversions, scientific notation, etc..

I am finally understanding chemistry as I sit in on my daughter's lessons taught by Mr. Harmon. I highly recommend the BJU high school chemistry course. http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=330116 Edited December 15, 2011 by ccm
TheHomeScientist
If you want a good secular course that's rigorous, check out the CK-12 initiative's Flexbooks. They have chemistry and the other sciences, math, and many other subjects, including AP course materials. And they're completely free. Annabel Lee
Thanks! I've looked around at some things a little but this gives me a little more to work with. Lizzie in Ma, when you say Spectrum Chemistry, do you mean the same company as the Spectrum workbooks sold at Barnes & Noble? Cheap or free sounds best, so I'm off to investigate further. Easy implementation is important to me. There's no way I can wrestle with a chemistry curriculum in addition to staying on top of the material. Dd is currently half-way through Geo-Trig. klmama
Spectrum Chemistry is not associated with the Spectrum workbooks. You can find it here: http://beginningspublishing.com/ Spectrum has no videos with it, but in addition to/instead of the Khan Academy videos you could supplement with these: http://www.gpb.org/chemistry-physics/term/chemistry They are very easy to understand and have note-taking pages.
