Guest
I am curious. The original WTM said to start grammar at 3rd but now it says 1st. Anyone have an idea as to why the change? If I do not use FLL 1, will my kids have trouble with FLL 2? If I do not use FLL 1, will using WWE 1 be troublesome?
boscopup
Probably because they wrote FLL1 and 2, which are done orally and in an age appropriate manner. Most grammar programs involve more writing than WTM advocates in the first and second grades. You can safely start with FLL3 if you'd like. Or 2. They all teach from the beginning. WWE1 is not dependent on FLL.
go_go_gadget
I've heard lots of people say on here that they started with FLL 3 and did fine; I can't speak to that because we started with FLL 1 in first grade and will be starting FLL 3 with my son in a couple of months. I think boscopup's correct in theorizing that the reason for the change in recommendations was because an age-appropriate curriculum for the first and second grades didn't exist yet when the last edition of TWTM was published. zenjenn
I started with FLL3 for my third grader at the advice of people here. It's been fine. We informally covered all the topics in FLL 1 and 2 without having a formal curriculum. Even FLL3 is a lot of review - but that's ok, it reviews fairly quickly, my 3rd grader benefits from the reminders, and it's additional copywork/writing practice which is always beneficial, IMO. I toyed with even having my accelerated 1st grader do FLL3, but I think we'll just wait for next year. There are some dictation and memorization exercises and such that I'm not positive my 1st grader would gracefully take on, and I see no reason to rush it or create unnecessary conflict. I also feel no need to do FLL1 or 2 because again, it's very natural for me to discuss most of those topics (and even the FLL3 topics) over the course of reading and writing. My feeling is that FLL1 and 2 would be good for parents who are not naturally going to discuss parts of speech, punctuation, sentence structure. It provides the dialogue for those who aren't naturally going to go there.
warneral
There is plenty of review in FLL3. My DD is in 2nd grader and I'm doing it with my 2nd and 3rd graders and it is working out great. She had only minimal grammar instruction in 1st grade public school.
