J'etudie
There was a thread about variations on the note card approach to organizing a research paper. Someone mentioned a computer program--online or software, I don't recall--where you could take notes on "cards" on the screen and move them into different "piles," etc. I did a search and can't seem to find it. Anyone remember?
elegantlion
Scrivener was one of the ones mentioned. It's really designed for writers, but it's ideal for any type of writing. It has a corkboard feature where you can line up virtual notecards. I used it for writing my Nanowrimo book and loved it for that. Ds has been using it for his work. He has a aversion to Word and likes Scrivener. You can download a 30 day trial for free, they have either Mac or Windows version (the Windows version is new), and one license can be used for all computer in your immediate household. it really is a cool program.
