deeinfl
My son is working on a program for his computer science course. He needs help with these questions in order to finish his program: How long is a half note and a quarter note with a dot next to it, supposed to be played? (meaning length of time to be played) Thanks for any help... Dee

A dotted half note takes the same time as three quarter notes, a dotted quarter takes the same time as three eighth notes.
regentrude
The absolute length of time depends on the given tempo of the piece. Often, there is a notation specifying how long a quarter, or half note, has to be (BPM- beats per minute). At other times, the tempo of a piece is given by a name like "andante" or "allegro". A quarter note in an Andante will be longer than a quarter note in a Presto; the note values only give relative lengths, not absolute. ForeverFamily
What is the time signature? If it is 2/4, 3/4, or 4/4 a half note will get 2 beats, and a dotted quarter note will get 1 1/2 beats.
