elegantlion
Ds is working on a WWS assignment and wonders when Alexander assume the title of "Great". I can't seem to find the information fast enough for him. Was it early on? After a few victories? After his death? Please help, thank you. Karenciavo
Hi Paula, I was curious about that too. My research turned up that the first known use was in a comedy (Mostellaria) by Roman playwright Plautus. The way it is used in the play indicates that the audience would have been familiar with the title. I wondered if Alexander, who was enamored with the east, took on that tradition from the Persians. I've also read that perhaps Ptolomey I was the first to call him Great, but didn't see any sources.
