Should I add Aleks math or something?

Hi all,

My oldest dd turns 8 tomorrow, she loves school, loves to be challenged, HATES being bored or when anything is too easy. She breezed through her Math if Focus 2b in about a month, did excellent on her tests. No, this is not a bragging post - I get that. What I do need help with is how to keep her happy and challenged. I don't necessarily want to just keep throwing more worksheets at her. I am wondering if trying a program like Aleks is a good idea to supplement. She wants more school, but I can only do so much. I have another dd that is struggling with school and really needs my help, she is not an independent reader so she is more glued to me. I also have a little guy. Any advice? This is not me pushing her either. Today, she aced the end of year test and then said, when is it ever going to be a little hard so it can be more fun. Sometimes I feel like I barely teach her. I try and introduce the lesson, she asks if she can get started right away on the workbook, and then she takes off. She was "advanced" in ps, but now she seems to be accelerating in her learning now that she is hs. Her language arts is even stronger than her math, but I think she is happier there, since she just picks up more books to read. Any advice? Like I said, please don't be offended, I am not trying to sound like some bragging mom - I have another child who is struggling, trust me I get both sides.

Thanks:)

You may want to ask on the Accelerated Learner board.

What are your goals with supplementing: (a) to add challenge and depth, (b) to add fun, and/or © to accelerate through the curriculum? Is she placed correctly within MiF at the moment? There's nothing wrong with moving ahead to a place that will challenge her.

There are other possibilities, though your need for independent work adds a tricky aspect. I'm thinking of supplements like Singapore's CWP or IP, or the Zaccaro books, or reading any number of fun math-related books - that's something she could do independently (there are whole threads on those, e.g., the Penrose series, Murderous Maths, I Hate Math, etc.). The possibilities for fun stuff go on and on - puzzles, etc.

As for Aleks, it doesn't necessarily sound like what you're looking for. Another similar program would be EPGY.

I know other posters may have lots of ideas for supplements, but it depends on your goals.

Thanks, I did try the accelerated board, but didn't really get much of a response. My main reason for trying more is because she just wants more. I will look into some of the fun math books you mentioned. Since this is our first year of hsing, I am quite new to all of the curriculum. Thanks.
