Candid
Ahem, you may also wish to try Robert Bruce as well. Some folks consider him the more important figure of this particular time period and series of events.
choirfarm
I would recomend The Bruce Trilogy by Nigel Tranter. It includes: The Steps to the Empty Throne, The Path of the Hero King, and The Price of the King's Peace. Dh and I went to Scotland shortly after Braveheart came out. The Scots HATED that movie. They said it had tons of innacurracies: wrong kind of livestock, kilts, as well as actual historical details. I bought the trilogy when I was over there. The books are written like novels and are very interesting. Wallace is in there, but as the previous poster said, Robert the Bruce is the more interesting and important player. ( Sorry Mel Gibson!)
