Impish
Ugh! Wolf was swapping out the battery in the van, and managed to kill it. Electrical system is totally down. So now, we're on the hook to get it towed, and then heaven only knows what the repair bill will be, but whatever it is, its not in our budget. Then, his buddy mentions that a neighbour is selling a van...2 yrs older than ours, but in way better shape and less mileage...$1000. Which is lovely, but we don't have $1000. We could sell our van, once its repaired (I don't know if we'd have any luck selling when the darn thing isn't running, for parts, I highly doubt it), but again, we have to pay for the repairs. I think Wolf's going to be forbidden from working on any vehicles himself from now on. We can't afford his DIY.
OLG
Dang. Timing is sure horrid, isn't it? Cars are a huge sinkhole, it seems. Sure hope the repairs are minimal - maybe just a fuse? :grouphug:
Impish
I honestly don't know...I'd think if it were just a fuse, it wouldn't be the entire electrical system that went down. *sigh*
lailasmum
Did he put the battery in and connect the terminals back to front? That can fry lots of things but you could be really lucky and it might just be main fuses blown.
Impish
I have no idea what he did, I wasn't there. Apparently he was shifting the battery to set it in the bracket, and something fried.
Impish
The tow/AMA membership is costing us $90. And they can't get here at least until 2, more likely after 4. The mechanic closes around 430, so we won't have the van back today. Baby Boo has a Drs appt tomorrow. So, we'll have to cab it. I am not pleased. We can't afford this carp. Parrothead
We had an old Ford that did not run. We sold it for parts for $500 without it running. Are you certain it will have to be running?

Are you certain it will have to be running? No clue, but I don't see how we'll buy the other van without selling this one, and we need a vehicle. There's just no way to come up with $1000 at this point. Our van does need to be replaced, no question. I just can't see our way to making this happen atm. Audrey
Dh says you may have fried the battery itself. Tow it in to someplace professional and have them install a new battery. That will probably fix it. If not, check all the fuses. If just one is not working, a lot of stuff will not work. Also check the cables. That's all he's got for you without seeing it. Starr
:grouphug: I'm liking that this might not be as bad as you first thought. Finger are crossed, and prayers are said.
macpuffins
I've helped a friend who did that too. It was a serendipitous combination of lousy co-ordination that jiggled some of the distributor cap bits and the connection from the ignition. A good "go around" reconnecting all the bits had it up to snuff in a heartbeat! Praying fervently this is just lousy co-ordination on Wolf's part, and that he was just all thumbs! :grouphug:

Its been towed to the mechanic that Wolf trusts. Given that its 430, I'm guessing we won't hear anything til tomorrow. Praying its an easy, aka cheap, fix. We can't afford this. :glare:
Impish
Oh, and he informed me this aft that there was a 'puff of smoke' :glare: I swear, he's not allowed to touch anything under the hood of the vehicle again.

Isn't he on some sort of leave from work because of baby? You may want to find him a hobby or two while he's off before he gets into more trouble. ;) :grouphug: I hope your van is an easy/inexpensive fix. Impish
Green with envy at your country's paternal leave! He can actually take up to 36 wks. Here, there's 12 wks maternity leave, then 36 wks parental leave, that either parent can take, or be shared btwn them. It only pays 55% of his regular income, so that hurts, mightily, but at least it guarantees his job will be waiting, and *some* income. Crocheting, huh? I think he'll take up shinny hockey at the outdoor rinks once they get going...gets him out of the house...Hopefully, he doesn't injure himself! :tongue_smilie:
