threeturn
Yes, that's right. He really, really, really wants some of those Space Bags -- the storage ones that you suck the air out of with the vacuum. :001_huh: Honestly, I was thinking of asking the Hive about Christmas presents before he started in about those. I know what my other two dc love -- princesses and dress-up for the girl and cars and trains for the other boy. This little guy is tough, though. Most toys are ok, but what he really loves to do is play with things that aren't toys. He wants to mess with the toaster, a lock, the flashlight, a folding chair, the box of bandaids, the tape measure -- those are the kinds of things he will devote tons of time and attention to. He doesn't really try to take things apart, but maybe he just hasn't advanced that far yet and one day will. :tongue_smilie: He has some lego-type blocks and those are OK, but he is not as in to building things as big sister. He does really seem to like his Hex Bugs and some friends have a stomp-rocket that he likes while visiting them. I just wish I could get a handle on one or two things that he would love and would really suit his personality without being too old or too babyish. And yes, he will likely get a Space Bag in his Christmas stocking. :D Thanks! Pam
Lacie
They have space bags that you can use without a vacuum, maybe he would like those. My boys love the Fisher Price Trio blocks. They are great for kids from 3 to 8 or older.
Alte Veste Academy
What you have on your hands is a Sandbox Scientist. He needs the book and some supplies for a few of the explorations. He will move on to needing a fully stocked laboratory within a few years. Thomas Edison started out like this, by the way. :D

He is probably ready for some real tools and anything mechanical he can take apart and tinker with. And I bet he would love a magnet science kit. thescrappyhomeschooler
What about a magnifying glass so he can look at things up close? Some other ideas, Puzzles Board game like Trouble or Hi-Ho Cherry-O (both my boys loved that one!) A Tool Belt- maybe even a real one with some real tools Guide books to plants, animals, robots, etc. like this - I remember my brother pouring over a sea life book like this when he was 4. PhotoGal
:D I would get him the space bags!
Farrar
I would give him a toolbox, a table that's his "workshop" and a huge box of stuff for him to take apart from the thrift store. And the space bags, of course!
PeterPan
For a different twist, the girls in the dorms when I was in college would suck the air out of trash bags (just the big black kind) using a vacuum and use that to shrink down their comforters and stuff for storage. So instead of pricy bags, I'd buy him regular bags and a SHOP VAC. Just think what he could do with that! A shop vac will go both ways (suck or blow), so he could do all sorts of things. :) They have smallish ones that go on sale 1/2 price at Sears on Black Friday for around $15. Is Make magazine a print magazine or only a website? He might enjoy that too.

When he was 4, we got him a rechargeable Stanley flashlight/spotlight for Christmas. It was a little pricey, $25 from the hardware department. You could probably find one that is a little smaller/cheaper. It's a great flashlight, I always get it if I need a lot of light.
Puma Mom
If you are confident that he won't take apart anything he shouldn't and that he'd be up for some supervision, I'd get him a good set of screwdrivers of various types and sizes, some old electronics and safety goggles. My oldest loved taking apart old VCRs, disk drives, stereos, remote controls, etc.

He has gone through two 'toy' ones, and two real ones as gifts. Boys just sometimes are more inclined to like 'real' things than toys. Like my boys enjoy playing with tape measures, and would not want toy hammers, but real ones. They prefer daddy's big Maglite flashlight to any of the toy ones they have. They want the 'real', grown up stuff, not the kid stuff. You know, the kind of stuff like Mommy and Daddy, the two people they look up to, use. :001_smile: Maybe a tool box with some safe-for-his-age tools would be a good gift? Screwdrivers, tape measure, level, hmmm, what else; well, I don't know much about tools. :D But you get the idea. Like you can find a cheapy plastic level, which would be safer for him to play with than an expensive, metal level. Stuff like that.
spaceman
Space bags! When my son was 4, he got a tool bag with child-size real tools. A hammer, small drill (only had screwdriver bits), screwdriver, safety goggles, measuring tape, and a small flashlight. He loves it, and it's handy! littleWMN
Maybe he'd like Snap Circuits too. I like the idea of a toolbox. Toys R Us has a neat Home Depot workshop for kids with real wood pieces to make things.
AnnaM
Haha my 6 and 7 year old both asked for command strips! Our son loves the building things like the ones Home Depot have. Lakeshore learning also had some and we picked one up for him today. It has miniature real tools.
dlpardo
My son sounds a bit like your son. I have been thinking about making him one of these for Christmas http://pinterest.com/pin/442701155/ Hopefully that link works. I know it has nothing to do with the Space Bag, but it is a cool thing you could make for a little one that doesn't really want anything. threeturn
Thank you so much everyone for the WONDERFUL ideas. I am making a list (and checking it twice :D). I think he will love the science book ideas for sure (in fact all three kids will) as well as the tools, workbench and box of projects. Never thought of getting him his own shop vac either! Thank you!! Pam
amo_mea_filiis.
Get him a bunch of space bags, different sizes! Mine think they're awesome. They love to put in pillows and vaccuum out the air.
