add History Odyssey to SOTW1 for sequence, booklist?

Recommended Posts

... we haven't started ancient history Properly yet for first grade, I thought I'd begin in the New Year. I thought I'd use SOTW1 (we have the activity guide, to) and add in the relevant bits of 50 Famous Stories Retold, On the Shores of the Great Sea, and CHOW.

I was looking at History Odyssey b/c folks often like their chronology better, and the extra reading suggestions (Modern Rhymes for Ancient Times was a hit in an earlier thread). I prob. wouldn't add many of the projects, unless Button turns out to be a History Pockets fiend (and that we can do w/o HO :)).

Would you find HO a good investment for this?

Since you already have the SOTW AG, I'd consider adding in only the activity books suggested in HO and foregoing HO itself: Ancient Egyptians and Their Neighbors and Ancient Israelites and Their Neighbors. I found the hands-on activities in these to be superior to those in the AG.

-- thanks, Moira! Your comment RE the activities is heartening; the AG seems so popular, but I don't _love_ the activities myself. Would you think it is worth purchasing the HO book for lists of other books, and for a more chronological approach than SOTW? or would you suggest just purchasing the activity books you mentioned? Hoping to spend my $$$ as well as possible :).

I would add the history pockets before purchasing HO... Possibly conisder adding notebooking pages too.

You do not need the AG and HO.

I wouldn't get HO in addition to the AG, as there's a fair bit of overlap. See if your library has the two activity books before purchasing. If I had to pick one, it would be Ancient Egyptians and Their Neighbors.

Stick to SOTW AG. Add in some History Pockets if you like, but you'll find plenty to do and plenty of extra reading in the AG.

What I find annoying is jumping around in SOTW because HO changes the sequence. It's easy enough to get to, say, a chapter on India and do a quick review of the previous chapter on India from a few weeks prior...

I use History Pockets, Treasure Chests, Ancient Science, Spend the Day Series (Projects and Activities That Bring the Past to Life) and Great Ancient Egypt Projects (You Can Build Yourself), for which both of the last two have many including Greece and China. I pick them up used and in lots. The cost for the projects is minimal compared to the learning.

Thank you, thank you! It is so marvelous when there's a consensus :) and esp. when it involves _not_ spending more money!

I think we'll go with the activity-book addition route. The recommendations are so useful: I've been looking at many of these, but many others too, and it's not easy to narrow the field. Now to check our library's catalog, and plan any purchases. -- for Christmas I'm hoping to give myself a history schedule, activities incl.!

:)
