Myeightkiddies
A mom in my homeschool group called me to ask about Writing with Ease. She has two children in sixth and seventh grade. They are really behind with creative writing, and she has never had them do dictation, narration, or copying. Since I haven't used WWE yet, which level should I advise her to use? Thank you for the help. I'm glad that she is finally leaning toward using a Classical approach versus the SoT she had been using.
Laurel
I'd suggest she do the evaluations here, which will give her a good idea of placement. I'd say probably level 3 or level 4. If she feels they need brushing up on very basic narration and copywork skills, she could buy the basic instructor text, which gives an overview of the first 4 years, and 6-8 sample weeks of each level, which she could use to go quickly through it. She can also look at Writing with Skill, the middle grades program. There is quite an extensive sample on the PHP store.
Jaz
I'd recommend WWE 3. I started there with my ds this past summer. We focused on narration and dictation and skipped the copywork. He transitioned from that into WWS well.
Myeightkiddies
Thank you, Laurel and Jaz! I'll recommend for her to start with 3. I'll also direct her to WWS. Personally I was planning to start WWE with my little man in a couple of years, so I'm looking forward to using it myself. WWS may be something that I try the second half of this year with my daughters. I'm using Write Shop at the moment. I appreciate the advice and will let her know what was suggested. :grouphug:
rocketgirl
I considered my daughter high in writing when we took her out of ps, but we started her in the last level of WWE which is 4 (WWS was not yet available) and it has been challenging. I don't think she should have started any lower or any higher if there was a higher. Although my 1st grader is doing fine in WWE 1 and my 2nd grader is doing fine in WWE 2. happyhomemaker25
When I did a placement test for my older girls with grammar I was shocked at how poorly they did. I decided that for writing we would probably start at the beginning of WWE and see how they did. For my 6th and 7th grader we do one week a day. It's not too much writing for them and they really love it. This combined with CLE grammar and FLL 3 has really helped them grow in the area of writing. I'm SO impressed with how well they are doing after only a few months. It has been way to easy for them, BUT it has really helped their confidence and given them great practice in narration. As soon as it starts to get tough we will slow down.
