Can someone who knows how to sew please help dd?

Recommended Posts

Dd10 is making Christmas gifts for everyone, and her first project is a hand sewn teddy bear for her sister. In the back of the book it has the pattern for the body and arms. They are on a grid with squares 1 cm, and it says that the scale is 1 square = 1 inch. I do not sew and I have no idea what she is to do with this. Once she has the pattern to size, I think she'll be fine, but I don't know how to scale the pattern for her. Do I copy it and blow it up?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!!

thanks,

lisa

At the fabric store, along with the interfacing, you can find pattern paper that is printed with a 1-inch grid (in blue). It costs about $1/yd, and it's not actually very papery, more like thin interfacing. What you want to do is get that pattern paper and copy the small pattern by copying the lines into the boxes, just like you sometimes find in puzzle books.

I would use the copy machine and increase the size that way. I would probably start at about 200%. Then I would measure the side of a square and see how close it was to 1 inch. Also as long as all the pattern pieces are the same size she should be able to go larger or smaller than the recommended size if she wants to.

I'd use a copier personally. If the squares are 1cm and need to be 1 inch blow it up 254% Alternately she could copy it by hand like Dangermom mentioned. And if size is not an issue, she could just trace it out of the book as is, it would be less than half the size it was intended to be, but it would still be a teddy bear.
