SW in IL
My son was using my Kindle DX and the little 5-way controller cracked in half. So, instead of telling me about it, he looked it up on the Amazon Kindle boards and saw that this is a known problem and several people recommended (apparently some of the time on the advice for an Amazon Customer Service rep) gluing it back together with super glue. So, he tried doing that and it only made things worse. However, when I read the Amazon Kindle board I saw several people who posted stating Amazon refused to replace their Kindle because they had tried gluing it. Uh oh. Has anyone dealt with Amazon regarding this? It seems to me (from reading the Kindle boards) that a cracked 5-way is a known issue with the Kindles but the answer you get depends on who you talk to. Some Amazon reps are willing to replace the Kindle even if it's no longer under warranty - especially in cases like ours (our Kindle was replaced under the warranty in late July, but the warranty expired in late October). Others reps seem to only be able (willing?) to offer a partial discount on the purchase of a new Kindle. And still others say they can't do anything if the warranty has expired. Anyway, I tried using Nail Polish Remove (with Acetate/Acetone - whatever it is) to strip away the super glue and while it seems to have reduced the amount of glue, it's still glued. I currently have a q-tip soaked in nail polish remover sitting on top of the 5-way. Not sure if rubbing the q-tip up and back helps or not. Do you think I should even bother trying to remove the glue or just call Amazon and hope for the best? I'd sure like to have use of my Kindle again - I was half way through a book when DS borrowed it and the 5-way cracked and now it will not select anything... I'm stuck at the menu. Any other ideas? Thanks, Sue
Sun
How old is the DX? I would probably just call Amazon and not mention the glue. It's not really relevant anyway; to me, it seems the relevant issue is that the controller cracked.
SW in IL
That's hard to say because... We bought a Kindle just over 2 years ago, with a 2 year extended warranty. After a year, the screen cracked. No one in the house admits to dropping it, stepping on it, leaving it outside in the freezing cold... One day it was just cracked, so they replaced it under the extended warranty with a refurbished (used) Kindle. That Kindle had "issues" from day 1. After 2 months, it would no longer turn on if the screen saver came on, and we had it replaced again. I thought the third one would be the charm - this one. From all appearances it was brand new and came with a 90 day warranty (thus extending our original 2 year extended warranty by a month or so). But that warranty expired October 30th. And, not 2 weeks after the warranty expired, the 5-way cracked in half. I'm still trying to remove the super glue but all the wiggling and waggling set things right - the Kindle is working again... But who knows for how long. I think we're going to call Amazon tomorrow and hope they'll replace it, super glue and all. Sue
