Food poisoning question

Recommended Posts

Ok.

Yesterday, all 4 of us were fine.

We came home from Aldi and the girls and I had toast with the hazelnut spread (like nutella) on it. Just the 3 of us ate this.

We went to church and they had a potluck dinner. The (precooked) food was served lukewarm/semi-cold- chicken on the bone, rice/beans, vegetables/chicken stir fry. All 4 of us ate this.

I woke up and felt fine, had toast with the fake nutella (dang, that makes me sound terrible- 2x in 24 hours) everyone else felt fine...

Later in the morning, my daughters and I all 3 got sick- "D" every five or ten minutes or so... theirs stopped around lunchtime.... would have been about 15 hours after the dinner and 18 hours after the toast... Mine continued, hasn't ended.

Husband is fine, and he has the world's most sensitive stomach and I generally have a stomach of steel. (I spent one of our first dates waiting outside a public bathroom while he was sick for HOURS.. he was so sick he couldn't even leave the bathroom to tell me... he has a WEAK stomach)

So, do you think it is from the Nutella? Or from last night's church dinner? Or something else entirely?

yeah, the dinner had 3 large dishes- one of veggies/chicken stir fry, one of chicken on the bone, and one of rice. All served from the same containers. All ate the same stuff.

We all thought the food was "suspicious" at the time, but felt like we had to eat it not to be rude, because we were new and people were sitting by us... didn't want to throw it away in front of them... plus we were hungry!

But I have NEVER ever gotten sick from food that didn't affect my husband's stomach- that's the only thing that makes me suspect the Nutella.

Food poisoning doesn't always have vomiting... depends on the type.

An intestinal virus would be possible, of course, we but we haven't been very many places- husband was gone last week and we were at home almost 100% of the time... and I don't think it would show up in 3 people all at exactly the same time... not saying that it isn't a virus of some type... going to Aldi and going to church 2x is pretty much all we've done... certainly possible to get sick one of those places, of course...

My younger daughter had shigellosis and definitely had no vomiting with that. Food-borne illness definitely doesn't always cause vomiting.

No fevers for anyone...

Well, dh just walked in the room eating a nutella sandwich, so I guess we'll find out.

And YES I had told him my thoughts- he decided to test the theory, he says.

That made me LOL .

That's *brave*, I guess.:001_huh:

I wouldn't think virus because we've never had a stomach bug hit that many people at once, it always spreads through the family.

Right... and this was truly within 30 minutes, all 3 of us are fighting over the toilets and one overflowed and yeah... it was fun times!!

I'm just now starting to feel a little human...

ETA: Sorry for all that TMI!

How's your husband doing?

He's at school teaching. He should be getting close to the time (# of hours) after eating that we got sick. We'll see!

He doesn't always have time to text during his planning period, so I'll find out after school, I'm sure!

The rest of us are 100% normal again, thankfully!!! Whew!

since ya'll weren't vomiting, don't think it was food poisoning.

I disagree. Diarrhea is a food poisoning symptom too.

My lab group once got food poisoning from a seminar lunch. Various people had differing symptoms. Some vomiting only, some diarrhea only, some had both. The food poisoning was confirmed by the local health dept, because of course the grad students all had leftovers in our fridges, and we submitted them to be tested.

Another anecdote: my husband routinely has lower GI trouble after eating the chicken (cut up leftovers from the previous day's chicken entree) at the salad bar in the cafeteria. He never has that problem with chicken anywhere else. I keep telling him he should save some every time, and then send it in for testing if it makes him sick, but he doesn't want to raise a fuss. I also keep telling him he probably shouldn't eat the meat on the salad bar anymore, but I guess he likes to live dangerously. :glare:

We've only gone to that church ONE time- this Sunday... and then the dinner yesterday... don't know anyone other than the pastor's name. And I can't really call him up and ask if he's cr*pping himself to death.

although, that would make us a bit memorable, wouldn't it??

:lol::lol::lol:

So sorry for your sickness . . . we had a terrible stomach thing at our house this week, too. But I had to share that I had to run for the powder room after I read your comment!
