ElizaG
My 6 and 7 year olds seem to need more structure in their day, to keep them out of mischief. (E.g. they've started a detective club with secret codes and rule books, which sounds fine... but they're excluding their younger siblings, are having nightmares about burglars, and now they've started removing loose molding looking for a secret passageway. :glare:) At the same time, we have a lot of educational resources that aren't getting used. Some are stored in various parts of the house, and many more are just ideas that are hidden away in lesson plans, resource books, and my rather tired brain. I'm thinking that it would help a lot to have some activity suggestion cards, either to put in workboxes, or just to put on a ring and leave out on the shelves for their spare time or a scheduled "free choice period." Something like these: Mom I'm Bored Activity Cards Homeschool Activity Cards but more detailed and academically-oriented than the first example, and less writing-intensive than the second one. We seem to do best with a range of input levels (up to junior high), but with the output kept at an early elementary level, with simple writing tasks and multi-sensory activities. Bonus points if our 2 and 4 year olds could take part in some way, too. :) Before I go and re-invent the wheel, does anyone know of any examples of something like this? ETA: The cards would be sorted by subject area. For example, the geography cards might include these suggestions: Put together a map puzzle Do some pages in your map skills workbook Play "Scrambled States of America" game Play a game using the talking globe (ask an adult first) Land & water form trays (do in kitchen; ask an adult first) Bean bag toss using large floor map: continents, oceans, countries, etc. Match landmark cards to floor map Match toothpick flags to floor map Match plastic toy animals to floor map Look in music books or CDs to find a song from the continent of your choice Look in cookbooks to find a recipe from the continent of your choice Do a craft relating to the continent of your choice Draw a picture of an animal from the continent of your choice (for ideas, look in nature books, geography books, or Draw Write Now & other drawing books) Edited November 17, 2011 by Eleanor
sunriseiz
Sorry, I don't have any ideas, but would love to hear from others. This sounds great! My oldest are 8 and 5, so they are at very different levels. Thinking they may each need their own box of ideas....;)

roanna
Those activity bags are really cute. I wish my my almost 2 year old would stop eating everything she comes in contact with so I could do more cute things. My 5 year old I think would really like the 2nd science one.
