happycc
We have a ton of hands on projects going on at the same time. When it is too much and could it deter a child(ren) from learning? What projects do you consider of value and what do you consider is twaddle or just busywork? For example, I find the making jewelry for a time period-kind of pointless maybe it is just because I don;t like jewelry. Some kids like it though. Only exception is if the jewelry coincides with them making the whole costume and acting out in time period.
WeeBeaks
In our house when there isn't that light of excitement in the eyes for doing a project, and it just sits weeks on end unless I force it, it means the project is a bust honestly. I toss it at that point. We typically don't have more than 1 or 2 hands on things (one history and one science) at any given time ongoing. That is our personal limit. MinivanMom
If you feel stressed or you aren't getting everything done then it is probably too much. I think you also have to evaluate whether the project is genuinely contributing to learning. Your jewelry example is a really good one. I would never organize a historical jewelry-making project. It just screams busywork to me. If, on the other hand, we saw a suggestion for a jewelry-making project in one of our countless history books and my children wanted to do it, then I would be happy to provide them with materials to work on it independently during their freetime. I wouldn't consider it part of our schoolwork though. We usually have 2-3 projects going at a time: one for history, one for science, and maybe one for art. My children may also have any number of their own projects going on. I don't monitor or help with their projects beyond providing materials and helping with glue guns. ChrissySC
If they do not want to do the projects, don't. Read instead. Science lab is another topic - yes, you must do these.
