Joyofsixreboot
My 7th grader came home this year to join my 5th and 2nd graders. Because she and I have been known to be at odds with one another she chose to do Connections Academy. She is doing well, and I do like the freebies like Discovery Education and Brain Pop, it's not challenging her. I'm thinking next year about something different. She likes to read and does well with math. Sonlight 100? HOD Rev to Rev? For science maybe 8th grade physics or high school Earth Science? I almost feel like she could "skip" 8th grade. I guess I'm just looking for ideas or BTDT at this age.
Lori D.
Not familiar with Connections Academy, so can't comment on the level of challenge it does or does not offer. But here are some ideas for more challenging material, but also that would allow more independent working to reduce the two of you being at odds with one another: Sonlight or HOD would certainly give a student who enjoys reading a lot of titles to enjoy. The possible downside is that either of those choices would require more of you as a teacher, and would be less of an independent working for the student. Not familiar with HOD, but Sonlight would not give you much in the way of Writing/Composition instruction, Grammar, or Literary Analysis as either an online English course or a dedicated English program. ONLINE COURSE Especially for a History, Science, Literature, or Writing course: - The Potter's School - Laurel Tree (English) - PLATO (science) MATH It sounds like she would be doing Algebra 1? Programs that have DVD components that would enable her to do much the math solo: - Chalkdust (more advanced/rigorous) - Videotext (more advanced/rigorous) - Teaching Textbooks (gentle) - Math-U-See (gentle) - Kinetic Books (digital traditional textbook with animations, interactive simulations, etc) Rigorous textbooks: - Dolciani Algebra 1 - Foerster Algebra 1 (supplement: Math Without Borders DVD tutorials) - Lial's Basic College Math Textbooks with DIVE CD: - Saxon Challenging supplements: - Art of Problem Solving ENGLISH - Excellence in Literature -- variety of types of classic literature; includes writing assignments; includes an honors option - Lightning Literature & Composition 8 -- variety of types of classic literature; includes exercises on literary analysis, and some writing assignments; written to the student; very gentle intro to literary analysis; no grammar or writing instruction - Analytical Grammar -- final exposure and firming up of Grammar SCIENCE - Rainbow Science -- Physical Science; complete 2-year middle school program, but can be done in one year by 8th grader; Christian; complete, with all lab materials; written to the student for solo work. Joyofsixreboot
Thank you. Now I've got some ideas to explore. I am blessed that if she knows what to do she'll just go and do it. She just doesn't want me standing over her explaining it:glare:.
