FYI Advent

Recommended Posts

YAY! Guess I'd better get on the ball and finish my calendar. I made a quilted advent calendar with large pockets a couple years ago and a new one this year. I always put a chocolate and a love note to everyone LOL. The kids like to leave little notes too, and once a week I get a small gift and leave a clue note for a hunt around the house for it.

Hook me up with ideas people!

Every year I let this sneak up on me and I don't ever fully pull something together.

I *did* order Bartholomew's Passage though. On Kindle, so no waiting for it to arrive :D

Now I just have to get a calendar and 'treats' together, ASAP! Spam me with ideas, please!

Advent starts in 10 days! We do a bunch of Advent stuff here, so I'm starting to pull it all together. I thought I'd remind you guys, in case it's sneaking up on anyone else.

Actually, it started two days ago. Are you sure you're not late? (Just kidding! For the Eastern Orthodox Church, it starts Nov. 15 .... )

Don't say that to me I might flip. I am unfamiliar with the orthodox church. I guess I need to read about it a bit.

I'm trying to figure out where to get candles for our wreath. No one in our town sells them, and I'm wondering if they will get here in time if I order them?

Here's what I did last year. The kids loved it, maybe I'll do that instead of buying them.

I know it's time to buy Advent Sunday cookies. I usually use cookie exchange cookies, but I have no one to exchange treats with this year :crying:

Top of my treat list is Walker's shortbread, and I may stop by Aldi's to see what kind of German chocolates and goodies they are carrying. Ingredients to make hot chocolate.

I just use pillars from any ol' store. You'll be fine! (Deep breaths!) Here's a link to our diocese if you're are interested; three years + one month ago, I had no idea what they were all about either.

Have a great Advent!

Thanks! That is what my dh said. I guess they don't need to be a certain color, or I can use the previous link. We are not Catholic and our church doesn't do Advent this is just something we do at home.:001_smile:

This is so cool - what a great idea! I usually find my Advent candles at Joanne ETC (or maybe it's Michaels?) - they often have the whole set of purple, white, and pink. Last year I bought an extra set because I knew I'd be running around at the last minute otherwise . Love the crayon-colored idea though.

Yeah, we're not Catholic either, but do celebrate as a Church. I love this time of year -- preparing to celebrate the Incarnation of our Lord -- don't you? I know it can be more difficult when you're doing it on your own. Have a joyous feast.

I just did a post on our favorite Advent resources. I'm going to try to copy & paste it below but here is the link in case it doesn't.

http://threelittlejewells.com/2011/11/14/advent-resources/

1. The Advent Book is amazing. The illustrations are just gorgeous. The pages are made out of sturdy cardstock and are made to last. This is definitely an heirloom book and one that will be passed down to your children.

2. My second favorite is One Wintry Night by Ruth Bell Graham. Beautiful illustrations, beautiful telling of WHY we needed Christ to come.

3. We will probably do a few activities from The ADVENTure of Christmas: Helping Children Find Jesus in our Holiday Traditions.

4. I’ve made two new purchases this year- the first is The Jesse Tree by Geraldine McCaughrean. I’m planning on reading it and using the ornaments that Ann at Holy Experience gives away with her FREE Advent Devotional Book every year. Kip always cuts down a little branch from a pine tree to use as our Jesse Tree.

And I just ordered this! Isn’t it lovely??!? I’m so excited- I love it. I’ve wanted to do an Advent wreath for years. I thought about making my own but when I saw this last summer I just fell in love with it. It should be here sometime next week and I can’t wait. I just need to track down some pink & purple tea candles and we will be all set.

In the center I am thinking of doing some pine greens, maybe a pillar candle… I’m not sure yet. I have some cinnamon scented pine cones that I will use in some of the little holes.

5. We have a Fontanini Nativity set that I bought when I visited Rome with my Mom in January 2003. I bought it at a little store right in front of St. Peter’s Cathedral. It was steeply discounted, probably because they don’t sell to many Nativity sets in January. Every year we set it up in the bay window in our kitchen and we put the three wise men upstairs in a far corner of the house. Each day they move just a little bit closer to the Nativity. Baby Jesus also doesn’t come to the Nativity until Christmas morning.

This year we are moving our family devotional time to right after supper. We will begin with lighting our Advent candles and then open one door in The Advent Book, read the scripture & put an ornament on our Jesse Tree. Then we will read one chapter of The Jesse Tree from Geraldine McCaughrean. I’ll read One Wintry Night and do some of the Advent crafts during the day with the children. Each night, after the children are in bed, I move the camels a little bit and so they run to find those in the morning when they are searching for Jingle, our Elf on the Shelf.

I have One Wintry Night and got the Geraldine Jesse Tree book this year! trying to start new traditions for our 4 year old. Thanks for all the details!

I have the Holy Experience Advent Devotionals (two years of them even) -- but have not looked to see if they match up with the Jesse Tree stories. I'm going to match with that book this year.

I know Holy Experience was making this curly "Countdown to christmas" wooden thing last ear. I can not find it this year though.

Thank you so much for posting this Jesse Tree resource! We have ornaments that I made and devotionals to go with them, but I've been looking for something a bit meatier. This looks wonderful!

Thanks! I'm printing this now. Also my sister just called and told me that Michaels does have Advent candles. She works there.;) Hopefully I can go get a set when my dh gets home.
