Remudamom
And it looks like my experiment is going to work. I answered my phone this morning to hear our postmistress going "Peepeepeepeep"! She's great. Anyhow, I rushed over and when we looked in the box there were 11 extras. They were packed for extra body heat and should all be roosters. So...chicken and dumplings are in our future. The 11 are now in a brood box meant for the others if the experiment didn't work. Now with more chicks than I expected I went up to the henhouse with a dark colored Sterilite box and lid. Loaded up broody Little Mom with her eggs and some shavings and put on the lid to keep it dark. Brought her into the house, slipped the eggs out and the eight banty babies in. Popped the lid back on and held my breath. Looks like all is well, at first two were left out, so I pushed them under and she pecked my hand and told me to butt out. Right now they're still in the dark and all snugged up. I watered/fed the chicks before I gave them to her, so I'm just going to leave them alone for a while. Nakia
How fun!! I can't wait to hear how it turns out! Well, only if turns out good, lol. I'm still scarred from our chicken massacre last month.
simka2
I need to order some! What sort of chickens would you recommend for me in texas? I would love a variety of egg colors.
Remudamom
Go to any chick seller and click on their breeds. It will usually tell you who lays what color. Then just pick out some from each group that you like. I'm going to order some more in Feb. I want my chickies started well before summer. myfunnybunch
Awesome! We need a Like button. :) I am giggling at the thought of the little roosters used for packing peanuts. I love baby chicks. And chicken with dumplings! Keep us updated on the eggs and the broody hen. I almost tried that this spring but decided we don't have room for new chickens right now. Poo. Truscifi
I bet they're cute! We want to try the same experiment, but so far none of ours girls have gone broody. They are still young yet, so it is probably to early. Good luck with yours. :)
Truscifi
I need to order some! What sort of chickens would you recommend for me in texas? I would love a variety of egg colors. We're in FL, not Texas, but we have a rainbow assortment of eggs. We get a nice rosy light brown from the Rhode Island Red, light blue from the pure Ameracauna, light green from the Ameracauna cross (crossed with a brown layer, not sure what breed), and dark olive from our Aracauna-Copper Black Maran cross. In the spring I want to get a traditional white layer, maybe an Andalusian, and a Welsummer or pure Maran for chocolate colored eggs. Mothersweets
There is nothing sweeter than watching a broody hen with her chicks.:001_wub: I didn't hear what your experiment is all about? Are you trying to make her more broody?

Remudamom
Here's a pic. The experiment was to see if I could get her to adopt the mail order chicks. She had already gone broody so I just let her set until the morning they got here. Here's one out from under, another peeking out and six covered. Sounds like it was pretty easy to get her to take them. :) Cat
zookeeper
We've had a broody hen, but no fertile eggs. She wouldn't stop so I got some eggs from a friend. One didn't make it, one was a dud and one had to be helped out of the egg. At first she didn't want the one that made it but my ds had just put the chick in her box. I told him to put the chick UNDER her and she took to it just fine. It's so darn cute!! I just love baby chicks!
Remudamom
It was really easy. I should have waited til dark but with the extras I kinda panicked and went ahead. I put her and her eggs in a dark box and then after she settled down I switched quickly and put the lid back on the box. She just finished raising four that she hatched out the first week of August. Two weeks ago she went broody again. She is a devoted mother.
