IEW SWI-A

So, after 9 lessons, I think we are totally using the program wrong. Due to budget constraints, I do not have TWSS. Not sure if that is the reason I am a bit confused. So far I have been having ds write his outline and then basically rewrite the original paragraph using only the outline. The problem is, he has an awesome memory and ends up just rewriting the original paragraph, simply adding in the dress ups. So, the end result is pretty much a word for word copy of the original. Am I supposed to have him add to the story? Should he be adding in additional details (ie. improvise what may have been said, etc)? Hope this makes sense!

I wouldn't worry about it at this point. I haven't done Level A, but after the first 2 units you move on to fact outlines (choosing the interesting facts or answering questions from your head). The write ups are then from those KWOs. The point of the first few units is really learning the dress-ups and how to make a KWO. So, even if it's the same as the original w/ dress-ups added, if he's written a KWO, you've accomplished the goal.

If you are to the Narrative Story unit and he is still doing it, encourage him to change the story a bit, if you want. Even if he doesn't it will be okay. My first ds didn't stray far from the original KWOs for the first couple of years but is now adding a lot of creativity to his narrative stories. My first dd, however, was VERY creative from the first. Ds really needed the structure of IEW bc coming up w/ writing on his own was hard. IEW has given him the structure so that he could work on the sentence formation, paragraphing skills and style without worrying about "what" to write.
