Dmmetler
We're going to NO for a few days around Christmas, via Amtrak. DD's never been there (and is likely to be disappointed if she doesn't see singing frogs and trumpet playing Alligators), and DH and I haven't been there since pre-Katrina. We have a hotel that should be within walking distance of the French Quarter, and hope to get by without renting a car since parking is so expensive. Any suggestions? Parrothead
Personally I like going here. I don't know if that is what you are looking for though.
Truscifi
Cafe Du Monde for beignets and chickory. Ride the street car all the way out to the end of the line on St Charles and look at houses/people along the way. Visit the fantastic zoo and aquarium. Take a walking tour of the garden district. Eat amazing cajun and creole foods. Visit the beautiful churches and other old buildings in the French Quarter. Do the ghost tour of the cemeteries. We went in '09 and were amazed at how many family friendly things there were to do.

That Margaritaville is okay (the one in Key West is better) but I prefer the Acme Oyster House.
