Is it possible to text and place calls on an ipod touch?

Recommended Posts

And if so, how? Is it free? Do you have to have it on a cell phone plan? We are trying to decide if it is a feasible gift idea for dd10, who really wants one. She has friends who send texts to her cell phone from their ipod touches, but I'm wondering if they are on their parents' cell phone plans? Can you place calls on an ipod touch? Do you have to have cell phone service for that? If so, what is the difference between ipod touch and an iphone?

Thanks for any help.

Yes. You can do both of those things through the WiFi internet connection. There is no cellular radio in the iPod Touch, so there are no cellular plans involved. There are free options for texting such as Google Voice (although I'm not sure it is available on Apple products), but I'm not sure about free calling. Skype is free if it is a Skype-to-Skype call. It is something like 30 Euros/year if you want to make and receive calls to normal telephones.

Of course none of this works if you do not have access to a WiFi hotspot. It seems that the first thing I hear from our children's friends that have iPod Touches when they come over is the password for the WiFi connection in our house. :tongue_smilie:

ETA: I checked and Google Voice IS available for Apple products.

There are several apps that will allow you to make calls and text with a touch. It partly depends on the generation of the touch though. They do not use a cellular connection, you must be connected to wifi for them to work.

Correct....my ds had the 2nd generation and in order to make calls with it he had to have earphones with microphone in it. Now he has the 4th generation and he doesn't need the earphones and he can also do Face Time which is very cool.
