UmMusa
I've been reading the other Duggar thread, but man it's getting long! I've been watching them for years and was drawn to how they manage their family. I wasn't aware of ATI or of stuff like that initially and just loved watching them 'live'. As a Muslim, I feel like we share so many beliefs in modesty, courtship, family, finances, and faith (they truly put their trust in God). I disagree with their choosing not to even try to limit family size. I don't believe in permanent birth control, but I do think we can try to have as many children as we feel we can handle physcially, mentally, and emotionally. Now, having said that, I so wish the show would show some real life issues moms have with children!!! Here are some of my questions that leave me wanting more of the show: * in my family of 4 kids, most of them are usually trying to talk to me at the same time. no matter how much we 'train' them to pause and see if they're interrupting, they all talk 'at' me all. day. long. so why don't I ever see any of the kids (especially the ones 10 and younger) trying to show their parents their drawing, a leaf they found, a rock, a hair stuck around their fingers, and stuff like that? my 2yr old comes up to talk to me all day. * i'd like to see more of how they plan and execute mealtimes. seriously! the time it takes to plan, prepare, eat, and clean up a meal takes a lot of effort. so i really want to know who choreographs lunch and dinner there (i'm sure it's not just one person). * anytime the film crew is there, you never see anyone 'working' whether it be cooking, cleaning, changing kid clothes, taking anyone to the bathroom, breaking up a fight, or talking to a child. the countertops and kitchen table are wiped clean, some stuff is out, but there aren't toys out or books or blocks or cars. when I tidy up my house it stays neat for a bit, but as soon as we have some down time a lot of toys and junk come out. my little girls change into dresses, change shoes, put on crowns and stuff all the time. my son plays legos, hero factory, etc.. and sometimes that stuff stays out too. i mean, for a show with that many kids, we would LIKE to see how they deal with these daily things that drive most people with a few kids crazy. * I was glad one of the viewer questions on their season finale was about how she does bathtime. she said it takes her two hours, and she stated what steps she takes. she didn't talk about who is doing the chore with her (of her older girls). I'm sure she's not the only one bathing all the littles especially when she has a newborn (or a preemie like Josie). I do like watching them, but I really wish they showed more of their real life. We see them taking field trips or hosting people, but I just want to know what the kids do when they all want to talk to mom at the same time, and how that doesn't take up her whole day! no kid ever is talking to her during an episode!!! Myeightkiddies
I would very much like to see a regular day as well. It isn't because I think there will be something scandalous or discrediting; it's because I'd like to see the true logistics of it all. To me, it would be truly fascinating. However, I don't blame them for doing it as they are. Even with nothing to hide, I'm sure they want the public (strangers) to only see a portion of their life. On their site, Michelle shared how she broke down crying when trying to do laundry (I'm sure this was many years ago) and how a friend helped her. I don't think they are trying to seem perfect or give that impression. I just think they don't want their entire life and privacy shared. Anyway, I'm just giving my impression of why I believe the show is filmed the way it is and what I'd like to see more of - if I watched the show regularly, which I haven't. So, in short, I'd like it to be more real than staged. Guess I could have just said that. :tongue_smilie:
UmMusa
Yes, you're right. Basically it's like we're being teased that we're going to see a family with 19 kids when the content isnt so much about them but more about fabricated outings we watch them take. I understand not wanting to give up too much privacy, but I also feel like they show a family not very unlike others b/c they don't show the details that set them apart from others (except the few factoids regarding diaper usage per year or how many cans of hairspray JimBob uses!) sunflowerlady
Years ago, when the Duggars first appeared on television, they "only" had 15 kids or so. They lived in a much smaller home, and the episodes were very much more like what you would like to see. They depicted grocery shopping, chores, organization, and other everyday real life things. Now they are all about trips and outings and more "contrived" subjects. There is very little of the real life type of things. That is one reason I am much less interested in their shows. That seems to be the trajectory of these "reality" type shows. the same thing happened with jon and kate plus eight. it was ordinary life at first but once the money started flowing and the comped gifts and trips arrived all that changed.
