rieshy
My native Austrian friend asked me for recommendations for a writing book/curriculum to help her daughter write papers. Her daughter is fluent in German, of course, and very high level proficient in English- but not actually fluent in English. The dd just started at a private English speaking school (she's 14), and her mom is wanting a resource to help tutor her daughter. Any suggestions? My friend went through International schools in Austria so most of her education was in English and her husband did some graduate work in the States- but it's been years for both of them... Thanks! Nan in Mass
What sort of writing? Writing as in organizing a paper, writing a good introductory paragraph, using transitions, etc.? Or Writing as in getting one's tenses right, punctuating properly, etc.? For the first, she would want a book on "writing". For the second, she would want a book on "grammar". They also make ones that combine the two. Perhaps one of the old Warriner's English Grammar and Composition books would work? I haven't seen the newer ones, but I know the older ones (here is a 12th grade one: http://www.amazon.com/English-Grammar-Composition-Complete-Course/dp/0153119055/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1321714137&sr=8-1-fkmr0 ) are good. They come in many different levels, so you would have to explore a bit to find her level. I know about this because a public school teacher gave me one when I began homeschooling and I have found it useful. HTH Nan
Guest mspen1018
this site has the college level rules for papers, citations, which citations are used on what papers, how to cite sources etc. Developing a Thesis (a phrase that in one of two sentences in the intro set the theme of the paper etc...) it is owl.english.purdue.edu... and commas are in pointless places compared to German essays and their format and as someone who knows both, I hated arguing about the edits from professors for having my commas marked when it makes know sense why US English essays are that way... that is the rough one because my AP German lit professor taught a Seminar for Educational Inquiry class before I did my thesis and graduated and she'd still mark me down and I couldn't do my thesis in German because these papers were sent to bosses... so she'll have to correct commas...
