Okay, I have no idea how to help DD apply to colleges

First off I want to apogize for such a long post.

This may sound weird as I attended three colleges in my life (community college, University of Illinois @ Chicago, Northern Illinois University) and I took care of my own applications, etc on my own. But since I was a Navy Vet and started my education at CC... I applied to the universities as transfer student and didn't have any issues in the application process. Didn't need SAT, nor write any personal essay, nor any recommendation letters. Just did simple applications on line and arranged for high school and colleges to send transcripts.

I have no idea how to help my DD with her college applications.

She sent in a early app for DePaul University in Chicago and she told me after she submitted it (deadline is Nov 15), but now what? I need to send her transcripts in and do a recommendation letter, but not sure how to do these.

The transcript was easy until I started the course descriptions. Also if the app deadline is a certain date... does that include the paperwork from others too (recommendations, transcripts, SAT scores, etc)? She is taking the SAT December 3rd... so her scores won't be ready by the early deadline.

I think the early admissions application may not work out, but can the regular application deadline still be okay (School of Music is January 15th)?

Dd will be completing high school in three years instead of four. She has 16 credits completed (not including the 9th grade English and Algebra I she took in 8th grade) and doing 6 more now. She will have 4 credits in English, 4 in Social Studies, 3 in math, and 3 in science, rest are PE, health, and music classes.

At this point DePaul is her only choice in schools. She wants to go to Chicago and no where else. DePaul is only Chicago area school, she has found, that offers Sound Engineering.

Thank you so much for your help!!!!!!

Do they require course descriptions? None of the schools both dd applied to asked for them. We did the one page (front & back) transcript. We had letters of recommendation, but only sent them if needed. Many schools don't want them, but some will esp. for scholarships. As to the SAT scores, just put on the transcript the date she's taking it, and they'll get the scores when they come.

Anita, have you seen this page on DePaul's website?

Homeschool admission requirements are explained near the bottom of the page. You need to send in an official transcript, SAT or ACT scores, community college transcripts (if applicable), and a list of textbooks used (optional but recommended - so do this if you want to maximize her chances). It doesn't look like they require any kind of detailed course descriptions beyond that.

Make sure you label your transcript something like this: "Official Homeschool Transcript" - you need to include the word 'official'. Also, make sure she indicates DePaul as a score recipient on her SAT registration form. If she didn't do this when she registered, she can go into her online account at any time and add her college.

Your daughter needs to submit either the DePaul application or the Common Application, and she needs to see that the recommendation form(s) are given to appropriate teacher(s).

If she used the Common App, then she needs to give them your name and email as her guidance counselor. They will email you with info to set up an account online, and you'll get links for all the forms you need to fill out for them. This usually includes the Secondary School Report and Homeschool Supplement, as well as a Midyear and Final report.

If she used DePaul's application, then, as the homeschool mom, you will need to fill out their own High School Counselor's recommendation form. You can find a link to this form on the website linked above.

DePaul's School of Music has no early action program, only the Jan 15 deadline. The good news is that you'll have plenty of time to get this done before that date.

In addition, it states that all School of Music applicants must complete an audition before admissions decisions can be made. Has your daughter contacted them about scheduling one yet? Sound Recording Technology is listed as a School of Music major. It may be that sound engineering doesn't require an audition like an instrument or voice major, but she should contact the college if she hasn't already done so and find out.

Do you intend to apply for financial aid? If so, check out these requirements. It looks like all you have to do is file a FAFSA after the first of the new year, and name DePaul as a recipient. There's a net price calculator on this website, which you can use to see what you can expect in terms of an aid award.

Hope that helps.:)

Yes I seen the page... I guess all these sites are blurring together-LOL.

Oh, I must have mixed it up from somewhere else... I need to not look at these things when I am sleep deprived (which is pretty much impossible for me at this time-LOL).

Okay, I didn't think to title the transcript as such... I will do that. I think DD did list DePaul.. I will ask her to double check that. But

I have no idea which app she did... I didn't even know she applied until after the fact and she said I needed to send in transcripts.

Thank you for clarifying this... I saw that music deadline was after the early action one and just assumed the EAP one was available for all majors. So we are saved anyway-LOL.

Yes she is learning a guitar piece that she got from the music dept. and will send in a recording of it. I don't know if this is the audition or not.

Yes we will be applying for financial aid. I have to also check into the veterans admin as my children receive benefits for school. Dd is applying for various scholarships also.

Hope that helps.:)

Yes thank you so much Karen!!!!!
