Good for music or apps Axe hair putty ;) A nice shaving cream I know a lot of preteen boys who still adore Lego Fingerless gloves Paperback novel (I'm not kidding about Jurassic Park being a book preteen and teen boys really like. Nothing sexual in it, either. It's good even if they've seen the movie. ;) ) Batteries Chapstick A small bottle of cologne you can stand Edited November 14, 2011 by LibraryLover

LibraryLover
How's the language in Jurassic Park? I was trying to think about that to mention, and I can't recall anything that would overly bother me for them to read. (Well, I suppose that's not saying much. lol) I do think the Chaos Theory guy says gd-dammit. Sh*t as well, I think. Can't remember about the F word. No C words. It's an adventure -science type book. It does have people speaking as people might speak in harrowing situations, but , for me, nothing stands out. By that age kids know what is ok to say and what is not ok to say, so I didn't worry about it. I don't like to hear swearing, and my kids don't...at least never around me (I've only ever heard my oldest swear...I really don't think my other kids swear at all). Here is a link to some book reviews. I am going to keep looking. One of the reviews there does say there is a lot of swearing, so it might be out for you. I edited it because there was a weird ad with a lot of cleavage from YouTube on that last link. Could be innocent, but I wasn't sure. It was at allreviews. Here's the Amazon reviews link: http://www.amazon.com/Jurassic-Park-Michael-Crichton/dp/0345370775/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1321292832&sr=1-1 Edited November 14, 2011 by LibraryLover

SailorMom
If they have anything with touch screens - there are new gloves out there that have special thread in small spots on the thumb and index finger that allow the wearer to use the touch screen without taking off thier gloves. Really cool and not expensive at all....

Spryte
These are all good ideas, and I will be stealing some! My guy (now 20) has enjoyed "Shakespearean Insult Gum", too (google it, if it sounds fun). A Starbucks gift card tucked inside a new travel mug would be nice, or some other gift card for travel-type drinks (gas station, maybe?) inside a new water bottle. Our stockings always have new earbuds for iPods now, much as they used to always have toothbrushes (we still do toothbrushes, and one year also did toothbrush sanitizers). Make Magazine is good, and picking up some of the items they use frequently is a nice touch - Altoids tins fall into that category, my Make boy always needed those! Live2Ride
I bought mine this book: http://www.amazon.com/Mini-Weapons-Mass-Destruction-Implements/dp/1556529538/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1321296071&sr=8-1 He will love it. I'm going to look up that Make magazine, he'd probably love it too. He's been looking at whittling, so I'll probably get some tools for him. The only issue is that my 15 year old son is very sensitive to it. He will stop watching movies that have too much of it. I don't want to get him a book that he would personally find objectionable. :)

My 17 yr old is as well. He chides me if I say dam ( sic). He liked the book, however. Maybe he was able to mentally skip over the words. ? At any rate, there are other good books to give. JP came to mind because there are so many copies floating about; it would be an inexpensive stocking stuffer & a book so many boys of the age do like. abbeyej
Wool socks (SmartWool or REI) make mine really happy, lol. Other camping/Scouts-related items (mini flashlight, pocket knife, Hot Hands packets, protein bars, etc)... Deck of cards, or other small, portable games. Mechanical pencils (okay, yeah, my kid's a super-geek), or other art supplies (my kids always seem to need more art pencils or good markers, blending stumps, etc)... Speaking of super-geeks, both of my kids are serious Doctor Who fans, and I'll be making each of them Dalek-themed fingerless gloves from a pattern on Ravelry... Unusual baking mixes or ingredients (sauces, vinegars, etc)... Welding goggles... These are cheap and fun for steampunk devotees. Juggling balls. Duct tape. Caution Tape. Clip-on booklight. Silly putty (yes, even for older kids -- or Thinking Putty). Multi-tool (like a Leatherman). Practical jokes kits (all kinds of little things... Most popular here is the nail-through-a-finger one... ack!) Jeweler's loupe.
