Chemistry: how to explain electron orbitals?

Ah yes. Dh explained this for me, and leave it to a man  We did chemistry last year and he told her to think of a football field with bleachers that encircle it. He said the field is the nucleus. He asked dd where most people liked to sit and she said in front. He said yes, closest to the action, or closest to the nucleus. He talked about the assigned seating in most arenas and how some sub-shells fill before others but how people wanted the closest seats. I think men can bring football into anything ;)

I hope I said that right LOL I am going completely from memory!

Love it!!!!

Also, this is slightly unrelated but my girls and I did a really fun activity for "fusing" elements together. It was a nice little intro to the periodic table. Maybe you can use it later or someone else might find it helpful.

Football and bubbles! I love science connections.

does anyone know of a good book that deals with the different orbital shapes?
