Using 2 MFW programs for one student

Has anyone tried to combine two MFW programs? I am thinking about using MFW/ECC for geography/art/Bible and MFW/RTR for history and science. My daughter really wants to do the human body for science, and this year, as a 3rd grader in private school, she is learning about ecosystems. We just made a rainforest diorama for a school project. I would buy the guides and student pages for both programs and piece together the books.

I love the mission and world culture focus of ECC and definitely want to start with that. But I can tell the science will not work for us. So, I was already considering adding a history component to our studies. If we used RTR, the history and science would be a great fit. (We would skip CTG because she has already studied ancient Egypt and Greece.)

It night help to know that my daughter is very advanced in reading (7th+ reading level), and she is considered gifted at the school. She loves to learn, so I don't think this would be overwheming for her.

It would overwhelm me as teacher. I’m not sure it’s the route I would take in similar situations if it were me for me. But maybe my thoughts would help you to decide what you should do. It might be the total opposite of mine.

Please forgive my lack of knowledge on your situation. This might be totally off base or without merit. Have you considered just doing ECC this year as “afterschooling†with her, then, do RTR when she’s homeschooling next year? You could still do some history with her this year in ECC by letting her read library books on the history of various people groups and countries in ECC. It would be history of people, versus history of key events such as chronological history focus would provide. If you get it now, you’d still be able to get most if not all of the year in with a strong academic student like you have. She might even like the Properties of Ecosystems book since it matches her science this year and she’s advanced.

Part of what I have liked about using MFW (since 2003) is that it has time to reach their hearts and not overwhelm. I also like in RTR that you get more than history. Bible reading and church history should not be missed. I have time for electives and other stuff.

I was one of those labeled with gifted label and was advanced. Back in the old days with gifted, they chose to enrich our studies so that we “got school done†and then did other things of interest after school. In other words, more electives were given instead of necessarily more depth in standard courses.

I don’t know if any of that applies to your situation or not. Ignore it if it doesn’t

Cbollin, thank you for responding. The more I think about it, the more I know you are right. We still may branch out to something else on science, but I think we are going to stick with ECC. Since we will be living in China, I think ECC would be a special year for us. I still may add a little bit of history in unit studies that go with the countries. I know we want to study Chinese history and will be studying the language too.

We'll do RTR the next year.

Learning another language will be a great addition no matter what! I think you'll have a great year no matter what.

one thing in the back of my brain is you might want to contact mfw about their recommendations for "book basket" issues when using ECC or any of their non high school programs outside of the USA. Part of the MFW manual is enrichment reading through an extensive library list, which living outside of US might be done differently. I know they had a standard answer and help file on that. silly me, can't seem to find it on their web or message board though. But the authors of mfw lived in Siberia and Moscow and homeschooled while living there, so they understand the challenges of lack of English library.
