moonlight
I saw both these games and I have a few questions. Which would be appropriate for an 8 year old? a 5 year old? Does anyone who has played kids of catan have a quick review for me?? Thanks, Seema

Julie Smith
The kids of catan is a neat looking game, very high quality. But it is a totally luck based game. If you play the advance rules you basically on each turn get to decide between going clockwise and counter clock wise. So you just look both directions and if one gets what you want you go that way. Except for the fact the pieces look nice, it's as exciting as playing candy land.
Mrs Mungo
My youngest played Catan on my "team" until he could play on his own. You would probably need to do that for your 5 year old. Kids of Catan is intended for very little kids. There are some rule modifications suggested in various places on the net to make it more interesting for the group you are aiming toward. allie911
My 5yo and 7yo both play Settlers with us. The 7yo is definitely better able to reason out the benefits/pitfalls of making certain moves. The 5yo tends to get fixated on doing one thing and then just waits until she can achieve that. She is not yet able to switch gears easily and change her gameplan. Both of them did/do play with an adult partner before beginning to play alone. I think by about 7 or 8 kids are able to play individually, although not necessarily with the skill of an adult. We definitely make some allowances for the littles that we wouldn't make for a grown-up, IYKWIM. We tried Kids of Catan, but didn't care for it much. Like the PP said, there is little skill involved and it gets pretty dull.
Faithseed
Ditto the PPs. We have just had our 8 year old watch the games once or twice before she plays. She's been playing Settlers for over a year. Our 6 year old...not so much, but the kids version is so dumbed down, even he doesn't really like it. BTW- we just discovered Stone Age, which has the same type of resource gathering play, but is easier to learn and play. We also own Agricola, LaHarve and others, but we find Stone Age to be a fun, refreshing game. It's my new recommendation as the first of this genre to buy. Melinda in VT
Kids of Catan was a flop here. I think Candamir of Catan is a better early introduction to Catan-style games. It has less conflict than Settlers of Catan and requires fewer ad-hoc adjustments to your game plan.
Meriwether
My older two started playing Settlers at 6 and 7. Ds5 probably could play but hasn't tried yet. Both kids can play to win, but Dh and I mostly "dirty" each other when we play as a family.
Sun
I agree that the regular Settlers is a much better investment than the kids version. The kids version is beautiful (truly beautiful), but there's not much play value there. Faithseed recommended Stone Age, and I would agree that it's a good game and perhaps a bit easier than Settlers to learn. Settlers is definitely a good family game and well worth buying. catz
My daughter started playing regular Settlers at age 6, after teaming up once with me. Great game!
Aubrey
My 8yo has been playing all of the Catan games w/ us since about 6yo. She got surprisingly good very quickly, but she does get worn out from the thinking faster than the rest of us. Actually, she gets worn out faster than the rest of us, period.
