I don't mind reading out loud as long as it's not "and the Indians and Pilgrims were bestest friend for ever and ever" ya know? I can't in good conscious do that. On the flip side I don't want "the Indians were the most innocent peoples ever and the Pilgrims were just victims". I in general like the Step Into Reading series so we will check it out

We usually read NC Wyeth's Pilgrims by San Souci. My understanding is that it's factual and correct. And, of course, the illustrations are lovely.

I think part of the issue in getting a really balanced view is that requires a lot more scope than just the Thanksgiving story. I mean, the real story of the relationship between the Pilgrims and the American Indians they lived near goes on for years and years after the first Thanksgiving.

Then yes, I think the Step into Reading one I recommended could be a good start for your situation. It did, very very gently, get the point across that there was some kind of tension between the natives and the Pilgrims. I also liked that it included a quick version of why the Pilgrims left England and the hardships of the voyage, so that context is there. I just wanted more details--my kids and I like to go in depth--so I'm going to look for the one Farrar recommended And go to a larger library in a few days for more options. ;) But that one was a fine introduction, and it is cheap.

I read The Thanksgiving Story (Alice Dalgliesh). It was very good for K/1st and had various interesting, real facts. We recently visited Plymouth, and the book included some of the same details that we learned on our real life tour. It is not like watching a 5-hour documentary, but it was a good book for K/1st.

The Charlie Brown Thanksgiving Special DVD is also a great one for Thanksgiving.

Three Young Pilgrims, by Cheryl Harness is one of our favorites for K-early elementary. It is factual, and the back of the book has a list of all the people who were on the Mayflower.

We also like the Sarah Morton, Samuel Eaton books -- and there is one on a Wampanoag boy, Tapenum's Day.

The Plimouth Plantation website has an excellent selection of kids books -- even if you don't order from there, it is a good source of info.
