Peanut Allergy Question

Recommended Posts

Would a peanut allergy cause a red pimply rash on my toddlers tummy? It comes and goes.

Food allergies are a new experience for our family. We also discovered he is allergic to cinnamon. I makes a rash on his face.

Any advice would help!

Thanks!

What makes you suspect peanut? (As opposed to dairy, etc?) Does it only appear after peanut consumption? I think it *could* cause a rash, but wonder about other allergens.

My son's peanut allergy goes straight to anaphylaxis, but his cousin's peanut allergy generally causes eczema only. (At this point, with peanut allergy the reactions can become more severe, so it's important to be careful, even if prior reactions have been mostly harmless rashes.)

It sounds like a trip to the allergist is in order.

Hoping it's not a peanut allergy!

Maybe it's contact dermatitis? The pimply part is what made me think of it. My dd got contact dermatitis on her legs from trying on spandex-y workout pants when she was three or four years old. Had he been trying on new clothes or wearing clothes that hadn't been washed yet (recently purchased)? You might try using Allfree laundry detergent, if it's a clothing issue.

FWIW, in our house, a pimply rash on the belly is usually a viral rash. My peanut-allergic one doesn't get that sort of rash (and his peanut exposures have always resulted in hives). My eczema kids rarely get eczema on the belly.

For a peanut allergy to cause something, there would need to be an exposure. Has the child been tested by an allergist? If there's a peanut allergy, you'd want an epipen on hand, peanuts out of the house, etc.

Has there been an exposure to strep?

My son is cinnamon allergic (hives) and nut anaphylactic.

It seems weird to me for a food allergy to show up as some isolated rash like that on one body part. Have you seen it more than once? Right after exposure? If you suspect peanut I'd see an allergist for testing as it's one of those that can/does go anaphylactic. I'd want precautions.

"Pimply" doesn't usually describe a food/oral allergy. It's usually hives, or eczema-like, flatter, broader, not pinpoint.

My DS is anaphylactic to oral peanuts, but gets contact rash from them too, milder. It looks likes hives and spreads from the point of contact outward. It is accompanied by general swelling to the area too.

When my kids get a pinpoint it has been a heat rash, viral, etc.

Thanks Hive! I guess it probably is not peanut butter. He has been eating it for a while. Just trying to figure out what the deal is with this pimply rash on his tummy. It comes and goes. I treat it with hydrocortisone cream but it keeps coming back. Some of you say it is viral. I have taken him in once when it first came up. Do you think another trip to the doctor is something to consider?

How often is it occurring? Cyclical of some type? Like weekly? Are there PJs of a different material than the other PJs? One kid of mine can't tolerate polyester at all. Or clothing that gets worn one every week or two? A friend of mine had a son allergic to one shirt for some reason, totally crazy, like the material of the collar of the polo shirt. Every time he wore it he got a rash.

Visiting somewhere occasionally where he would be on his belly? Sand? Beach?

Bath and body products used sporadically?

I personally would probably keep a diary of food but also of bath, trips, etc., that might show you the pattern if it is often enough to see it recur a couple times.
