Could I get some book recommendations for my almost 11 y/o ds?

Recommended Posts

Our library is small and he's running out of appropriate books for him. He's pretty open about what he's interested in. He's read a lot of sci-fi in the past, but he's kind-of moving away from that and branching out.

His reading level/comp. are around 9th grade or so, if that helps any. He's also pretty mature for his age (and for a boy ;).

Some authors I typically suggest for this age:

Arthur Conan Doyle

Rick Riordan

Eoin Colfer

Madeline L'Engle

Brian Jacques

Anne McCaffrey (Harper Hall trilogy only, unless you want to screen them)

Robin McKinley

Terry Pratchett (the kid books, not the adult books)

Ursula LeGuin's Earthsea books (not all of her books are kid-friendly, but that series is)

The Ray Bradbury book R is for Rockets, those are his kid-friendly stories

Neil Gaiman's Graveyard Book and M is for Magic (not all of his books are kid friendly)

Jules Verne

We haven't read them yet, but I've heard the Redwall series is good and there's lots of them! You might also try Walt Morey (I think that's right). He wrote Gentle Ben and a whole bunch of others...definitely not sci-fi. Has he read The Chronicles of Narnia? The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings? CS Lewis also wrote a space trilogy (I have yet to read it, but keep hoping for some day!) My ds also really enjoyed the Warriors series (centered around the "clan life" of cats) by Erin Hunter. Then there's The Guardians of GaHoole (or something like that)

I work in the young adult/children's section of our library. I'd also suggest these authors:

Thomas Batson

Bryan Davis (2-3 different series)

Donita Paul (dragon series)

Angie Sage (Septimus Heap series)

Nicolas Scott

Chris D'Lacey (another dragon series, but they are small clay dragons)

Jenny Nimmo (Charlie Bone series)

John Flanagan's Ranger's Apprentice series

Dorothy Hoobler's Samurai Mysteries series

Erin Hunter (three different Warriors series)

Kathryn Lasky's Guardians of Ga'Hoole
