question for nurses

Recommended Posts

I am an RN that currently works about one night shift a week in a hospital. It's killing me, frankly... trying to get in the nap the day before, and then being wiped the day after and then homeschooling and taking care of ds1. Are there any other nursing jobs- very part-time- like in the evening or in a 6 hour day once a week type of capacity that ya'll do? DH doesn't want me to work weekends, since that cuts into his free time and family time. What about giving vaccines or something? We just need a little extra money to fill in the gaps...

I'm feeling so frustrated as I prep to go into work a night shift tonight knowing I will feel awful all day tomorrow, waiting for my little one to take his two hour nap so I can sleep. I'm not naturally a night person, and, yes, I know tons of nurses work 3 shifts a week and run on very little sleep, but I'm tired of it- I'm feeling haggard and I hate it. Ideas, ladies?

Have you looked into Home Health?

There are a lot of options in Home Health. There seems to be a shortage of people willing to work in the early morning or evenings to fill in for the little things that fall during that time.

Some of these visits could be checking glucose/giving insulin, hanging TPN, evening admits, antibiotics through a PICC, dressing changes, etc. There are also long term care options but these seem to usually be daytime (work hours) or nighttime (sleep hours).

Best of luck with your search!

Many hospitals are getting a "same day" unit, where people who just need a few more hours to stabilize and then go home, or need to recover from a simple procedure, or pop in for a unit of blood. Hospitals use them to un-crowd the ER and the recovery room. It usually shuts up shop about 8 p.m.

I'd ask around locally. Call all over asking for part time work. Can you ask if there is a job-share person, or if you are willing to work more hours one week and less the next, can you "fill in" for vacations at local offices or homes.

I have no advice, but wanted to say that I feel your pain. I worked nights full time before and after having my first. After my second, I dropped to working just Friday nights. It seriously wiped me out. I felt like it was Tuesday before I didn't feel completely exhausted. It also seemed that the night before I would go in, someone would wake up in the middle of the night. It was just misery. Complete misery. Staying up all night even ONE night a week is really, really hard! And, I'm a total night owl. But it is way different to work nights when you don't have to function during the day!

I know longer work at all but for almost 2 yrs after my first son was born I worked in an After Hours Clinic. I preferred to do phone triage, which many RN's seem to hate, but it was a good fit for me. Also, the hospitals have triage that have call centers the nurses work out of. I know that even my former Ped. contracted w/ them to take his after hours calls.

ps...I could NEVER do hospital shift work again. I'd be sooo overhwelmed! I don't know how you've done it. I suspect you are: 1) younger and 2) in better shape than me!

Thank you so much- these are great ideas. To further the challenge I'm on-call, so even after my nap (which takes out of school time with ds) I am sometimes cancelled. I was cancelled twice this week. The pay is excellent with on-call and shift-dif, but it's taken it's toll on my well-being. I really appreciate the confirmation since sometimes I feel that I'm just weak.
