unsinkable
I always try to thank a veteran (and service person) if he or she is wearing soemthing identifying (like a hat or shirt, jacket, uniform). A man w/a WWII hat was walking into the grocery store with a cane (the kind with 4 feet like the guy from UP). And I stopped to thank him. He asked if I would walk him into the store. He put his arm thru mine and we walked slowly together. :crying: He told me he was on a destroyer that (among other things) escorted merchant marine ships across the Atlantic. So he may have escorted my dad.:crying: We had a nice talk and I met his wife. She usually walks him in but she got too cold. I am kicking myself b/c I couldn't hear very well and didn't quite catch the name of his ship. God Bless these men and women!
cloversandlions
Lovely! Thank you for sharing! That's a wonderful thing to do - to thank them. I should do that more often.

I felt funny at first because I was afraid of what kind of response I'd get but now it's like second nature. Every one has always responded kindly and with thanks. Some are more talkative than others but all have been thankful. I had one guy lift up his T-shirt in Joann's (craft store) parking lot to show me his scars! Myeightkiddies
I had one guy lift up his T-shirt in Joann's (craft store) parking lot to show me his scars! Chicks dig scars; you know?! I'm sure that you stopping him and talking made his day. He'll probably smile all day thinking about it, and he may share the experience with some of his buddies. Actually, he'll probably tell others about this for some time. Little acts of kindness can really go a long way with some. It was a very nice thing you did. I hope more will do that. Spy Car
My dear old dad was a veteran of the Navy and Marines in WWII. May he live to be 100 and beyond. I'm very proud of him, and all who have served. Happy Veteran's Day! Bill
catz
Awww ... thank you for doing that. What a sweet gesture to him. Thank you vets and their families for all you do! My kids volunteered to play music in a veterans day concert tomorrow, so we're marking the occasion anyway. HRAAB
That was so kind of you. My father-in-law served aboard the USS Griffin during WWII. He's 93, hard of hearing, but would love to talk to someone about his war experience. I'm so glad my girls have had the opportunity to learn from him. In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. Yeah! The scar man actually had scars from the war AND from when he was shot 4 or 5 times as a securtiy guard! He was a lucky man that he lived thru both. unsinkable
Thanks for all the thanks. :001_wub: I remember something else the man I met yesterday told me. He was a radio operator and his wife says for years his index finger would be tapping out Morse code in his sleep.
