'Twas the witch of November come stealin'

Recommended Posts

I really like that song (and ballads in general). However, every time I hear it, I initially think of the Richard Jeni bit about it being the best song to clear out a party. Want to go to bed and no one is getting the hint? Put on "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald."

The website for the museum has more information about the ship and the wreck: http://www.shipwreckmuseum.com/edmund-fitzgerald-36/

and a little bit of irony too, having "unsinkable" post the link.....

 Oh, that's baaaad!

I always liked that song. Living right on a great lake has given me a greater appreciation for the vivid descriptions of the "winds of November."

eta: A day late, and a dollar short, but I'm wishing now that I had made my student listen to this tune and sketched out an arrangement for us to play this evening. Our homeschool group has its annual scholastic fair tonight, and she and I are playing a duet. It would have been a cool historical link if we could have played this! Oh well....

We just shuddered through a big storm up on Superior at the beginning of October and whenever we encounter a storm up there it makes me really appreciate the dangers of Great Lakes shipping....

Me too!

And last year we had a HUGE storm and everyone compared it to the storm that sank the Edmund. So we drove out to the lake to see it. Wow. The total power!!!

Anniversay of the loss of Big Fitz

I used to teach the kids about ballads with this song.

I've used it with each one of my kids in our homeschool for ballads. Their is an excellent documentary available on this. I can't remember if it's History Channel or someone else (we always checked it out from our library), but we watched it whenever I taught the ballad for English.

I'd be afraid to drive out there, LOL! They told us when this came in that we needed to be off the lakeshore road as waves could overtop the road. The locals were so intent in being indoors by mid-afternoon that we were really impressed that we needed to get back to our B&B by then, LOL.... The waves were still breaking so big and hard the entire next day (and through most of that next night) that no boats would go out, even in the harbor areas.... Scary stuff....

That next night we were actually staying at a place right across the road from the lakeshore. It was so loud when we went to bed. Then in the middle of the night is just stopped (all the wave action) and got completely quiet. It woke me up, LOL!
