Please explain this grammar exercise to me.

Sometimes something is right in front of my eyes, and I can't see it. Could someone tell me if I am missing something here?

Use the following phrases to complete exercise 11 & 12.

a. the car belonging to Mom

b. the friend belonging to the man

11. Write the phrase using a possessive noun.

12. Write the phrase using a possessive pronoun.

Answers: a. Mom's car

b. the man's friend

"a" seems correct to me, but "b" seems incorrect. Isn't "man" a noun and not a pronoun? Do I just not understand what they are asking for??? Shouldn't the answer be "his friend" or the question should be "Write the phrase using a posessive noun."

:001_huh:

TIA!

Here is a good link to help on pronouns:

In looking through this they don't list man anywhere.... To me it seems man is too specific to be a prounoun. So, I think you are right, that man is actually a noun. It would be a prounoun if it was like the friend belonging to him...

Actually, that sentence about the friend belonging to the man, well it just comes off sounding weird to me anyway. Who say's that?

It seems to me that answers A and B are both in reply to #11--write the phrase using a possessive noun. To do a possessive pronoun (#12), the answers would be:

a-her car

b-his friend

I agree, no one really talks like the original sentences, but they serve as a definition of what possession means, and can add a deeper layer of understanding for a child. Goofy though! Merry :-)
