Kim in Appalachia
This doesn't affect me, but it affects many people I know. In a town close by the factory is closing. Over 200 people will be out of work. It's been there for over 30 years (I think closer to 50, but I'm unsure). It was a good factory, they earned praise for their high productivity and low injury rate. The parent company bought another company this summer. Apparently, they are moving this plant's production to Ohio. The reason really stinks. It's to get away from the union. This plant is union, the Ohio one is not. The people at this plant are not paid that well. My guess is that they will have to pay the people in Ohio more. Wages are lower here. The savings will come from health insurance. This job gave people health insurance. It is not the greatest coverage, but it's coverage. I'm so sad for the families that will be affected. There are not other jobs in the area. The town is very isolated and poor. Most will have to make over an hour and a half drive to find work. They can't move. Their family is here and really, the property is worth little, nor is there anyone to buy. I just feel angry about it and needed to vent. Lisbeth
I think we'll see more and more of that. Businesses are also going to flee to low tax states. OH is not one of those, however.
edelweiss
That's happened quite a bit here. The union work rules make it hard to be flexible in bad times, so the company moves to a situation which allows an employee to be productive all day. Rules as 'only employee with job description X can sweep' are not affordable in hard times. :iagree: It's so sad for the employees and I really feel for them, but I understand why the companies do it.
