Car recommendations needed...Volvo Cross Country?

Recommended Posts

I will need to replace my Jeep sooner rather than later...I won't need 4wheel drive any longer (don't live in snow country anymore) but would like a station wagon type to haul one large dog here and there.

Fuel economy is nice too since I drive a long way to work.

Thinking of Volvo station wagon "Cross Country." Any thoughts on this or any other vehicle?

My sister drives a 10 year old one and says it is the best car she ever owned. Since she was born before Hitler invaded Poland, she has had a lot of cars.

A few years ago Ford took on Volvo...some suspected quality would be compromised, but just 2 years ago China took on Volvo...the Volvo of 10 years ago is not the Volvo of today. My parents had a 760 turbo that they put over 300k miles on it..my Dad was able to fix most repairs himself. Today, he says he wouldn't touch it...he is in the auto industry and sees a load of issues (he works with Lexus)...Jeep/Volvo/BMW are three brands he would not touch.

Have you considered a Toyota Highlander hybrid? Lexus also has a Hybrid if you want to spend the money. My Dad could have a Lexus but prefers to take the extra money and continue driving his 1989 Toyota Corolla, our Sienna has 200k miles on it, our Prius has over 50k and it's not even 2 years yet. I'm saving thousands on gas by driving the Prius.

Other brands he feels would hold up are Honda and Subaru..

We have always had volvos. Our most recent was purchased after ford bought the company and will be our last, they are just not the same. We are actually in the process of replacing it with a subaru (mazda has also become very highly rated, they are a japanese company similar to subaru).

I was afraid that today's Volvo is not comparable to the one I had. Mine was 1985 (can you believe it?) and ran until 2002.

Subaru Outback seems interesting, certainly big enough for my needs. I am afraid I could not afford a hybrid because I am looking for used and hybrids have not been out that long, also they probably cost quite a bit more. This will be a cash purchase and we have a budget...well with every month we are still looking, the budget gets a little bigger...:001_smile:

We bought a 1999 Volvo S70 in 2008. In the 3 1/2 years we've owned it, it has had something wrong with the engine for all but two weeks! This is despite $5500 in repairs. It again needs $1000+ in work, so we are getting rid of it. The parts cost more than other brands we've owned. We've spent more fixing this car than our previous 2-3 junky cars combined.

Now I know why Volvos are so safe...it can't get in an accident when it's rarely in driveable condition!

Anyway, obviously ours is a lemon, but the part costs alone have persuaded us to never buy another one. Our mechanic said that a certain repair that is $200 for most cars is $1000 for Volvos because no other company makes Volvo parts. You don't get a choice about buying brand name or generic parts.

We had a wagon and when it died in a horrible accident (the only injury was to dh's pride, thank goodness) we ended up getting a Mazda 5. Not quite a wagon, not quite a minivan. It can *either* haul stuff *or* extra people in a third row. We find it super useful and the gas mileage is pretty decent.
