blondeviolin
...noticed he had some congestion. So the nurse swabbed him for strep WITHOUT consent from my SIL. It was negative. (My SIL would've said no because he had allergies and they forgot his medication that morning.) She voiced her concern and was told they didn't need consent. And then? They had the gall to send her the bill for the labwork. :-O
Lacie
That is so wrong. I would be furious and would not pay that bill.
Starr
I would look at what consent papers I might have signed.
Anne in CA
This is pretty common. My BFF finally had to remove her child from a Seattle high school after they ran up $$$ in tests for her dd's migraines. BFF tried to explain that she was dealing with this with her own doctor and that they needed to KNOCK IT OFF, but the school sued for her her dd's medical records and tried to make a lot of trouble for her in general. There must have been something going on there that she never could figure out, but she couldn't afford a lawyer to fight them, and their doctor bills so she moved back to Oregon to get out of their school system. Unicorn.
Umm, I would be mentioning the word attorney if the school tried to stick me w/ that bill. Schools have a right to seek emergency medical treatment, not to swab a throat. If they suspected strep, then they should have called the mom! That is way overstepping their bounds! mom2denj
What :001_huh:and what:glare:!!!!!!!! I have never heard of this! That is insane! She needs to look in the school handbook and see if that is in there. i have a hard time believing it is!!
SweetPea
My ds attended a school where I would get called to come and clean up scrapes from recess. The school could only provide care when I provided a doctor signed form along with necessary medication.
J-rap
Wow! I've never heard of a school taking on medical tests like that before! Our school nurse just handles stomach aches and skinned knees, or sends the kids home. We're never charged for that! I'd look and see what kind of consent form your SIL may have signed. Harriet Vane
SIL needs to send a certified letter. She should keep it brief and unemotional, simply stating that she was not consulted and did NOT give consent for the test and would therefore not be paying. angel marie
i was a school nurse for 3 years. i would see what the state regulations are regarding nurses working in a school and what scope can they practice under in your state. your school should have a handbook on this, or you can get the information with the state board of nursing. i would suggest you look at the paperwork you signed in regards to consents you gave as well.. does the nurse work under a doctor at your school? nurses do not have the authority to order tests on patients. this requires a doctor's order. i am not sure what your school has set up. it may have standing orders that a nurse can use that a doctor signed off on and oversees. again, they would need your permission and that goes back to any consents you may have signed. what happened doesn't sound right to me either, but i do not have all the facts. A little investigating can get you the correct answer.
